Can't see CGY sending their #1 defenseman (on a beautiful contract) for Rask. Also, it just creates a huge hole for Boston. A Subban/Hutton tandem would only spell the Bruins picking top 5.

I would have slotted Giordano as their #1, and they have Hamilton who should progress to Brodie level. It is a great deal, but they have no goalie. I know it would be leaving the B's in a similar situation, but the team style of play kind of lends them to not needing to hold up 7m in Cap space. Khoudobin & Johnson are prime examples. I agree it leaves them weak in net, but Matt Murray! I also think McIntyre and/or Subban will be a stud. If that really isn't working you could always deal Picks and prospects for a goalie - not that I would, but Subban and griffith for Cam Ward/Mike Smith type guy

I don't think Hamilton has the defensive game to develop into a Brodie-esque player. I won't dive into that too much though. Hamilton is very young and could go a few ways in his career. Took a slight step backwards though.

On the situation in net you've left the Bruins......I get Matt Murray had a tremendous season (as MAF's backup) and in the playoffs, but let's remember what Matt Murray did is the exception, not the norm. I think that Bruins' fans are looking at that situation in Pittsburgh and thinking Subban could do it as well. I personally don't see it with Subban. Murray's AHL numbers are far superior than Subban's. Murray also was 'eased' into a role at the NHL level as the backup (something the Bruins should do with Subban -- give him the back up position and see how he does). If Subban plays so well that it somehow makes Rask more expendable, then you have yourself a good situation. With that said, I just don't see it from Subban right now. Small for a goalie, and relies on athleticism. He's shaky in net, and does not have great positioning skills right now. He relies on his athleticism to make up for that, and in the NHL, that's tough to do. He's just not NHL ready (full time right now). Honestly, BOTH McIntyre and Subban had poor seasons in Providence. I would not be holding out hope they are the "next guy" in Boston.

This is a situation of "robbing peter to pay paul". Upgrading the defense at the expense of goaltending is a risky situation. I'm all for bettering the team, but I think there are better ways than downgrading at goalie to do it.

I understand what you are saying. I just don't value Rask the same as you, I guess.

I think Rask is pretty average which has been evident to me since their D has been declining. To be honest if your scenario plays out, it's better than being the 9th seed. I agree with you on Hamilton, I think he is highly overrated. I don't think it's the exception either. Hammond did it a couple years ago, Murray, Neimi, Crawford. Quick is really the only "elite" goalie to win it.

Top 13 goalies by Salary: Only 2 have cups - Crawford #7 and Quick #13.

You don't need an elite goalie to win. In fact they often don't. I don't think Subban could do it to start the year, but I think a combination of Subban or McIntyre with and Enroth, Reimer, Hutton type guy wouldn't be that much different.

Rask has had the chance to win them games and he doesn't. I don't blame him for the crappy D in front of him, but Elite 7m dollar goalies (should) steal games - he doesn't. He was 27th in save %. I just don't think the drop off would be as great as you seem to.

Awesome post! The SC stat with the goalies is a good one. I assume you had to do some research on that (something very few do lol). I don't see the Bruins trading Rask, since I don't think they'll get the value for him, but I really enjoyed this one. I like Rask, he did help them get to a Cup in 2013. I feel like if he had a better D-core in front of him, he'd have a chance to bring them back and maybe win one. a lot of work would need to be done though. One reason I'm just not into trading Rask and going with a tandem of Rookie/backup is because I just don't view McIntyre/Subban as great goalies, right now. That said, I want one to be the back up next year. I want to see what they can do at the NHL level.

If Calgary is going to make a deal for a veteran goalie it will be for Fleury, not Rask.
