Using a data-based model like this removes some of the guesswork on deals like Kapanen and Johnsson.

D is obviously still shaky. Big jump to assume Dermott is ready for top pair minutes (on his off side, after he comes back from a serious injury), but without moving Marleau I don't see how any bigger of an upgrade is possible this offseason.

Zaitsev trade to OTT helps them meet the salary floor without dead money. Leafs take the LTIR commitments off their hands, Sens get a player for nothing but cap space (which is hardly a concern when they're so far below the floor).

Franson might be a pipe dream for top 4 minutes, but it'll have to be a similar bargain bin add this summer to make everybody fit. Zaitsev is probably about replacement level, so anybody that isn't much worse than that can fill in.

Bear is added via trade, insulates against the first bit of the year without Dermott. I can see the 3rd in that trade becoming a 2nd to make the value match—no big problem on the Leafs' end I wouldn't expect. I think Brown will end up with the Oilers and a hockey trade like this would be fun—but maybe Khaira and Bear are valued higher out there than I've guessed (I know Oil fans will let me hear it either way).

Could see any of Gauthier, Petan, or Khaira playing that 4C slot. Marleau will have to rotate out some nights (RIP iron man streak).

Pretty sure there is a cap to how many players you can put on LITR and might be a % of cap also.

IMO Marner and Kap will both get request offer sheets at that price. Overpaying Johnsson.

Why does Ottawa do that? Gets them way further from hitting the cap floor, and they would pay Zaitsev more money in one year than they would pay MacArthur AND Gaborik for the duration of both contracts. Those contracts are insured, so the sens could be paying as little as 10% of their salary.

The sens WANT those style of contract. If anything they'd add more LTIR contracts if possible, taking picks in the process.

IR for Macarthur and Gaborik helps them reach the floor better than Zaitzev plus insurance covers %80 of the salary. This trade makes no sense from the Sens side

from an Oilers perspective, they will say no. Edmonton can't afford to give young, developing Dman that have already proven they are on the bubble to make the NHL.
The best you will get for Brown, IMO, is a 4th. overpaying for a 3rd line player is what got Chai fired. Oiler fans are praying Holland isn't going to do the same.

Didn't consider insurance for them (duh). My thinking was that Ottawa needs actual bodies. It's not like their D group is deep (5 guys signed right now, all expiring next summer, plus Ceci), and I assume they want to let Brannstrom develop another year in Belleville. Plus the Sens don't exactly have a rep for avoiding overpaid Toronto d-men with term remaining.

Id agree with this, even if the value isnt all that far off, Khaira and Brown are simular in value and there is no point in trading bear unless if it helps this year or next one with scoring. If you remove the pick and and bear or just remove khaira id say it's plausible

The Oilers are under no circumstances trading Ethan Bear for Connor Brown.

Brown can likely be had for a mid round pick, why give up a solid D prospect and one of the few NHL level forwards on the team for a middle 6 winger?
