I like the Staal buyout idea, but I think the price we pay to the team who buys him out would be be higher than just Neal Pionk.

depends on how aggressive you're trying to be with the rest of your stuff. For example, 5 years for Karlsson is a terrible idea. As is bridging Buch and Deangelo. You can avoid retention and use the Karlsson money to extend Buch and Deangelo and have enough to make an acquisition. And even more money if you trade Vesey and don't do perhaps the most idiotic thing of resigning Staal at any price.

Also just fwiw Karlsson isn’t signing anywhere for less than 7 or 8 years. Someone will offer him the term and it would be silly for him not to take it with his injury history.

No team can offer him 8 but there was reports that his wife wasn’t happy so far away from her family in Ottawa so I think he’ll sign somewhere close to Ottawa

Well the Sharks certainly can...but it doesn’t seem likely he’s resigning there anymore
