Easy way to make cap space if pens move Kessel, the 1.2 mil that I am over the cap would be the space made from no longer retaining on Kessel

Traded back without Retention (therefore removing the 1.2 the leafs retained before) Phil the thrill has proven he is worth more than $8 mil so if he is gonna be traded by Pittsburgh they can do that easily at $8 mil and get a little extra from Toronto by doing a paper transaction in which Phil is traded back to Pittsburgh without retention, obviously being paid more decreases his value but I doubt it’s by more than a 2nd and a 3rd, Pens fans do you think leafs gotta add more or no?

I think what you are proposing is legal but I would need to check the cba. Since the trade to us pr to pens required no retained salary during those trades It should be allowed.

Although I’m not positive as it does seem like cap circumvention.

Do the pens do it? I’m not sure, sounds like they are looking to move him. Then the cost of a 2nd and 3rd for 1.2m is a hefty price too.

I don't see the point in taking on the extra 1.2M for the Penguins. The biggest sell on Kessel to other teams is that they can get a PPG player for less than 7M, why throw that away?

why would the penguins hurt their cap to help yours? Simple, they wouldn't. End of discussion. The penguins don't really care about your cap issues, they got their own.
Thanks for swallowing 1.2 million in cap space for an eternity so the penguins could win cups.

As for that edmonton trade, I don't see why Edmonton makes it. Toronto fans keep trying to act as if there is value in Brown. In 82 games he had 8 goals and 29 points last year. You can find a 4th line fringe AHL player on like any team in the league that matches that level of production. That's not something you go out of your way to trade for. You really have to be more than a fringe NHLer to have any kind of trade value or make people want to make that move. He had one good year 2 years ago. Ever since his stats have fallen just like his trade value.

1st Kessel Trade is if they are moving him anyways, I wouldn’t expect Pens to take on 1.2 mil for an any price but a team that is acquiring him might and it’s isnt like they are helping out for nothing it’s a 2nd and a 3rd... that is a good chunk of Value
2nd a 29 point player isn’t a “fringe NHLer”.... that’s just plain wrong but anyways, he is also a great Penalty Killer and has a ton of Chemistry with Mcdavid, he would play on his wing and Far Surpass his rookie totals when he played up and down the lineup
3rd don’t reply just to hate cause youll usually just end up looking stupid

I feel in any Connor Brown deal with Edmonton the Oilers give back a player not a pick. We’re not in the greatest cap scenario either so I feel Benning or Kharia go back to justify the caps.

Personally I don’t see the Oilers trading Larsson, at least not until our D prospects are fully flourished. But if they were to I believe it has to start at either Kapanen or Johnsson

Once a team retains on a player they are on the hook for that amount until the contract ends. This was proposed by someone to Elliot Friedman on 31 Thoughts and he cleared it up.

The retention is on the books. Even if Kessel went back to Toronto it would be for $6.8+$1.2, not $8. Toronto can not move that $1.2 retention.

Did you logically think out what you said. If another team was going to trade for him, why wouldn't that team be the one who gets the extra picks if they are going to swallow that salary? What is the need for a middle man. There is none. Period. That makes no sense at all.
A 29 point player is a fringe NHL player. You can go look around the league there are all kind of fringe NHL players with 29 or so points. This is why the average length of a career for an NHL player is 5 years. Because you can pretty easily find someone of marginal talent to come in and score 29 points. They are always replacing them with someone younger in hopes they turn into something more. Go look at rosters and you will see that. That's how you end up with a Brown or a Simon (28 points) and say, yeah he's a fringe NHL player and we can probably put a younger prospect in there and get the same if not better results. So please for the love of god stop trying to act like they are more than that. The talent level difference between the best AHL players and the bottom NHL players is like nothing. It's why they can come up and fill in and there isn't usually some huge drop off. Especially for wingers.

They can remove the retention if they acquire him, then trade him back with no retention, it’s a paper transaction

Ok you can do it that way too, in a three way trade, 2nd and 3rd plus Kessel to X return for Kessel from X to Pittsburgh Toronto Plays middle man and removes retention and X gets extra assets for taking on an extra 1.2 mil, and about Brown if you want to think about it logically... there are 31 team that have to ice 12 fwrds each making there 372 full time forward spots on NHL rosters, brown was 211 in NHL scoring, if you consider 1-93 are first liners, 94-186 are second liners, 187- 279 are third liners then purely by offensive stats he is a middle of the pack 3rd liner not a fringe NHLer, add to that that he is a penalty killer and not just about his offence then he is a top of the line 3rd liner... again not a fringe NHLer

he is a fringe NHL player. Come tell me Bracco couldn't have put up 29 points for Toronto playing 82 games. Like I said, when you can be replaced by another guy in the AHL and get the exact same production you are a fringe player. It's why Toronto won't miss him at all when they ship him off. He's just another replaceable body in the lineup. He's not the guy who is gonna win you games. He's not a consistent scorer etc.. You put way to much value on these guys. If you are hitting mid 30s to 40 points over an 82 game schedule you can come talk to me about being a legit NHL winger. But when you are not, you are a soon to be replaced by someone younger.
