If the Avs think they are better next season with him than without him, then the Avs keep him, UFA doesn't really matter. 90 other UFAs don't get traded. Don't offer him a NMC in his next contract if it such a concern. or have a clause where his NMC is dropped for the expansion draft only.

Tough to say, sounds like Sakic is going to talk to him soon about an extension but he did say he is comfortable going into the season with Barrie...between the lines if there is no extension in place. Its always been the same message with Barrie, if teams want him, its a hockey deal and you have to pay up to get him. In the leafs case its Nylander, thats the only trade they are looking for

Are you sure about that? What about when a player waives his nmc to get traded? He has to go through waivers at that point?
In any case, would a team really claim him at that contract? And would that be such a bad thing for the Avs? Gives them cap relief down the road and they have enough quality D to fill in.

Also what I'm saying is the Avs will be fine if they somehow lose EJ to expansion. I kind of hope the Avs swing a deal to make Seattle pick him. He'll be 33 and 2 years left at 6m after the expansion draft. He's a good player for this team but he's expendable.

If he waived his NMC he could be “claimed” by Seattle during expansion draft. That’s what I’m getting at. If EJ doesn’t waive and we do end up signing Barrie we lose one of Makar, Girard, or Barrie for nothing.

AVS should trade EJ now. EJ's clause is: "Modified NTC - NMC - lists 19 teams he can be trade to" The NMC basically means that he cannot go to waivers or be demoted to minors. Anytime Sakic can ask him for his list of 19 teams where he would agree to be traded. Maybe they could get a late 1st rounder for EJ. Like the TOR pick from LAK or the STL pick from ANA or the SJS pick from BUF.

I’d also be down to trade EJ as soon as possible. He still has value but I’m afraid this is the last year he will.
