pass. 1 year of Shultz coming off major injury seasons. Hes too risky to move Barrie and Kerfoot even though you do get Kessel for 3 more years. But his age in those years taking him to 35 could be a concern.
Not enough incentive for the Avs. Its a move for the sake of making a move for them while the Pens get younger and faster without sacrificing too much.

I'm a Penguins fan, so I am probably a bit biased this way, but I've actually wondered about a similar deal being made. I was looking at Kerfoot or Compher coming back the other way at forward. With Cale Makar coming on, there has been some talk that Colorado may look to move Barrie. If Schultz was able to resign in the 4.5-5.5M range for 3 years (I don't think he has done enough to warrant an increase in $$), does that change your mind at all? Gives Makar a full year to play 3rd pairing, and then swap him and Schultz. Barrie is going to cost more than 5.5M after this year, which Colorado may not want to pay with Makar in the wings and Johnson still pulling down 6M.

Think it's fair based on value. Schultz is still young and is a top4 dman who won't cost Tyson Barrie money, especially when they have Sammy Girard & Cale Makar in the pipeline. Tyson will probably get close to $8.5 next year, which could create an issue with Pittsburgh as well. Kessel is still a PPG player (even in his down year) and I don't see his age concerning him too much for his style of play. The upgrade on defense is obviously there, but they would be losing a big part of their top6 as the medium. Value is fair, but I don't see it benefiting the Penguins other than creating cap space (used to sign both Col players, but at least not losing Schultz for nothing)

They are keeping Barrie, Since he has came into the league he has been something like 8th in Defensive scoring, guys like that dont grow on trees. The depth is great but Johnson isn't a top 4Dman for much longer, he was suited for a lesser work load with Cole on the "3rd pair" in the playoffs. Makar and Girard pair are going to be the top pair next year, they are unreal together.

Kessel is great but Barrie puts up 60 points as a Dman and Kerfoot Compher etc are 30-45 point guys. Schultz doesnt interest the Avs at all bc of his injury issues and is still a 1 year rental. Avs scoring goes down in that sort of trade and lose big cogs in the roster.

Dont think its a good trade, its 1 step forward 2 steps back with that sort of framework for Kessel
