Gralund buyout only

Forgot about Johnsson because CapFriendly doesn't have him on the roster by default anymore. I'd like to see what Nylander can do offensively, but Johnsson is a better fit in Sully's system. I would actually probably add Johnsson and waive Ruhwedel to WBS. Go with 14F, 7D, 2G to start. Ruhwedel has been a solid 7th d-man for us for years, but he didn't look good last year. Give those reps to Smith, plus we have Friedman, Ruhwedel, Butcher, and Shea in WBS who we could add if we need more defense.

domino effect
Not sure if you realize that both Kane and Bear are injured and going to miss MONTHS of the season. Kane had hip surgery in June and is out 4 months, so likely late October early November at the earliest. Bear had shoulder surgery in June and is out at least 6 months.
Not really an option that will work well. Even utilizing LTIR, we are thin at WBS forwards to play in their place.

Gralund buyout only
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>Did Pittsburgh have any RFAs that went to arbitration?</div></div>
Yes, Drew O'Connor filed for arbitration. While he's an improving undrafted college player who had a good showing at Worlds, he doesn't really have much room to ask for a larger salary. Some people think the Penguins may have asked (wink-wink) DOC to file to give them more flexibility for a potential Granlund buyout.

POJ isn't ready, you have Ty Smith (who's played more games at the NHL level). This also gives them almost 2M in cap space, which is enough to pick up additional defense depth at the deadline.

Major moves

Pettersson has more value than most fans give him credit for. He is still young, and his analytics have been good. He's been inconsistent, though. Even the Athletic writer for Detroit had Pettersson to DET for a 2nd or 3rd as a possibility. Penguins have too much $$ tied up in LD, and a young, cheap POJ waiting to play, so most want to just "dump" Pettersson for cap space.
Hronek trade was stated because there have been some rumors that Hronek is unhappy with Seider's emergence taking some of his playing time.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought NJ could use Pettersson until Bahl is ready for full-time NHL duty. McGinn could help in your bottom 6, especially if you lost Miles Wood...although I doubt NJ would move on from BOTH Zacha and Wood. The pick could be negotiable. I was hesitant to include the 2023 2nd simply because Pittsburgh doesn't have a 3rd that year either.

A 1st and Sam Poulin for Hagel would still work for the overall concept, as Hagel and Crouse would still fit under Penguins cap by shipping out Kapanen.

What's Chicago's plan for LD next season? De Haan and Gustafsson are UFA. Pettersson is an upgrade over Caleb Jones or Riley Stillman. Chicago is getting a 1st in this deal, plus a solid 2nd pairing defensemen who is only 25 years old.

Seattle Kraken Test Team
This was just a test run based on selections passed onto me by someone else. I don't think the draft will go like this. I do believe that Seattle will load up on defense and then trade them, but, this team is REALLY weak on the wings. Other than Vatrano and Craig Smith on the wings, nobody here has ever scored 20 goals. Seattle is going to have to take one or two higher priced veteran wingers if they want to be able to score goals.

People consistently fail to understand what premium goaltenders are worth because they're never traded -- precisely because they're too expensive.</div></div>
Varlamov is tough, because he's 6 years older than Gibson, and signed for 4 less years. On the plus side, he's got better playoff numbers, and his deal is cheaper than Gibson. If Varlamov was a UFA this summer, he'd probably be able to ask for 7-8M AAV easy.
If I was Pittsburgh making an offer for Varlamov, probably Legare, the 2022 1st, and a younger, lesser player with upside like Jared McCann. And I fully believe that is likely not enough to get it done, either. If Pittsburgh had a better prospect pool, I'd expect they would need to offer a better prospect.

It's funny. There were a lot of Pittsburgh fans angry with 6 years at 3.5M AAV for Tanev when we signed him. I can see that a bit without knowing the player. After coming here and playing for 2 years, he's worth every penny. Just because Pittsburgh is using him on the 4th doesn't mean he is a 4th liner. He probably should be getting at least 3rd line minutes, and I wouldn't even be opposed to him playing with Crosby to open up some space for him, kind of like Kunitz did several years ago.
Pittsburgh better protect him. After trading Hornqvist, Tanev is kind of the heart and soul of the team. Gives 110% every night.

I can respect someone saying no, that you may be contenders again before Gibson's deal is up, and that fact that it is unlikely Anaheim would deal Comtois, BUT...saying Guentzel, Marino, Legare, and a 2022 1st for Gibson is absolutely ridiculous. Gibson is good, and wouldn't be cheap to acquire, but, he's not going to pull in 4 premium assets either.

Umm....where'd the Pittsburgh Penguins go? This isn't a retool, this is dropping a nuclear bomb on the team. You've got 11 new players in the lineup. The team wants to get younger, yet you bring in Staal and Karlsson.
I'm not sure a single trade made here is appropriate value on either side. That's gonna be a big no from me.

That's a fair assessment. I know Kahun can play both wings from his time in Pittsburgh (he played more RW here), but I can't argue with your reasoning. He'd either have to take another shot at playing center for Buffalo or it's not a great fit.

Not really. PIT ACGM trade Murray because most knowledgeable Penguins fans know that Murray is going to cost more, and the Penguins don't have the cap space to keep him. NHL GMs will value Murray's playoff experience over Jarry, who has 1 NHL playoff start. Murray isn't going to pull in a ton, but this is a fair deal. If you think Matt Murray is worse than Ulmark, I don't think there is much more to say here. That's just asinine.

He had 2 points because he's injured. When he has been healthy, Bjugstad has outscored Bennett ever season he has played, and has surpassed 30 points in 4 of his seasons. I do believe a prospect or pick would need to be added from PIT side because Bjugstad is a UFA and his injury status. If his back isn't healthy, nobody will trade for him.

McCann seems to play better at LW. Pittsburgh wanted McCann to be their 3C of the future, but, he was very up and down in the center role this season. Short term, Buffalo gets the immediate better player in McCann. He's only 24, and he's put up several 30 point seasons already. He seems like he has more to give, but he just hasn't gotten there. Middlestadt longer-term probably has more potential, but he hasn't been able to put it together at the NHL level. Seems like a good change of scenery type move for both players.

Way to go. Jim Rutherford just died from laughter with your trade idea.
To make sure I understand, you want PIT to trade Murray and their best defensive prospect, for a forward prospect who hasn't cracked the NHL in 5 years and has gotten worse in the AHL, and, a 5M a year goalie that we don't need.
If....IF....Toronto were to go after Murray, they'd have to find a 3rd team to take Andersen. Pittsburgh has no need. Pittsburgh would be looking at someone like Kapanen, Johnsson, or Kerfoot and a pick for Murray....and they wouldn't be including POJ.

Radek Faksa is not a 2nd line center.
Carolina has a glut of defense. You aren't trading Letang there.
John Marino for 3 years at 1.25M AAV? As your number 1 defenseman? He better fire his agent into the Sun after signing him that deal.
Engelland is 38 years old. What on Earth are we signing him for? To see if he can be worse than Rob Scuderi or Jack Johnson.

Of course Ottawa accepts an incredibly lopsided deal. Murray isn't going to pull in a huge haul, but, he's not going to get traded 1 for 1 for a goalie who has yet to play an NHL game and a so-so AHL career to date. Just not going to happen.

20-21 Realistic Roster
For those Buffalo posters not wanting to give up Jokiharju, you have to give to get. Buffalo has ZERO goaltending. It's not like Ulmark is some unbelievable stud, and UPL isn't ready. You may have also glossed over the fact that I said right in the Team Explanation that if Buffalo wouldn't move Jokiharju or didn't want Murray, you move on to the other 5-8 teams that need goaltending.
The fact is, Buffalo needs goaltending, and a 2-time cup winning goalie isn't going to go for peanuts. Pittsburgh's biggest need for next season is bottom pair defensemen. I wouldn't mind getting Jake McCabe from Buffalo for Murray, but there would have to be more coming from Buffalo, like a high pick or high prospect.
For those Penguins fans who would rather see Jarry go over Murray...it's strictly a cost issue at this point. If the Penguins want to keep Murray at what it will cost to keep him, they are going to have to trade away others the team needs to keep. Hornqvist would likely be 1st they would need to move to afford Murray.
I'd also respond that, Jarry's trade value may be at it's highest, but, I think you may be overvaluing what he could get in return. A 2nd or 3rd round pick, or maybe a B-level prospect is about all you get for Jarry, and even that may be high. He had a good season last year, but he had his rough spots, and he's still never played an NHL playoff game.

Who in their right mind wants to pay 4.1M for Nick Bjugstad, who has missed 73 games over the last 3 seasons, and is coming off major back surgery. Before this latest injury and the pandemic, maybe someone would give a 3rd or 4th for him. Now, I don't see any team taking a chance on a high AAV 3C coming off major injuries. Not worth it.
