I think Nylander is great and has lots of potential but idk how much of his success is contributed to Matthews, and he’s making 7 million. If the rumours of us getting panarin or having a chance is true I wouldn’t do this trade but however if we don’t get him I think it’s a possibility. And tbh I have no idea what the gms value Nylander is now so idk what would have to be added

You're right about Marleau. But if Marleau retires the Leafs are closer to being cap compliant. But if Nylander needs to be traded the Leafs can't take much back in cap. So maybe the trade might even be the Rangers second round and the Tampa second rounder for Nylander. Most Leafs fans think the Leafs are will get "lots" of Nylander. I don't think so.

if marleau retires, you get absolutely 0 cap space added. He's over 35 and falls under that clause of the CBA. he'd carry dead cap weight

Please we have discussed this endlessly. A retired Marleau can be traded and his cap hit absorbed by another team. Arizona and Detroit did with with Datsyuk.

You'll face an offer sheet for Marner, Kepenen, Johnsson before any team with cap takes on marleau (unless you pay something close to the player they're chasing). Yes it is dependent on the player signing, but everyone knows toronto cannot sign them all. Make them match on Kapenen and Johnsson and that'll leave marner out to dry, make them match on marner and they can kiss kapenen and johnsson goodbye (or Nylander).

Basically, no team will take a cap hit for cheap knowing the situation Toronto is in. It's like NJ taking advantage of WSH in the johansson trade, got him for just a 2nd round pick

I didn't say free. But thanks for ignoring the Datysuk trade. That is the comparison. New Jersey didn't take advantage of Washington. Washington wanted to spend their cap in different ways and go two seconds for Johansson. Happens frequently trades like that.

And sorry if you don't understand how RFAs works . The Leafs CAN sign all their RFAs. At that time they will be over the cap probably a trade will have to made. Tampa/Jets maybe some other teams wiil over the cap this summer when they sign their RFAs, but please that doesn't mean Tampa isn't going to sign Brendan Point or Winnipeg isn't going to sign Laine /Connor/Trouba because they will be over the cap immediately after the signing. But for some reason you think the Leafs are so unique. Tampa and Jets are going to trade player(s) after their RFAs are signed too. And as I have said before, I think it's Nylander that is the cap casualty by the Leafs. Why Nylander? Leafs have adequate replacements on the wing to take his place.
