Pionk has been terrible the second half of the season and is also a RFA. His cap hit along with Vesey's would be higher than Kapanen's next contract. Kapanen >> Vesey. Pionk doesn't make up the difference

The Avs might be interested but doubt they give up both 3rd rounders in the draft especially with already having no 4th. You'd likely have to spread a 3rd to 2020 or 21.

Leafs need cap space. Leafs have "defensive depth". It's having a NHL competent Dman (preferably a RHD) that can play 18 minutes a night is the issue, as it is with most teams.
