Disregarding these insanely low contracts (you're about $6M low and 2 years short on Marner and $3.5M low and 3 years short on Lee) I think Spurgeon has a lot of value but no way the Leafs trade for him using Marner, especially with a pick and double especially if Spurgeon isn't coming with an extension. Marner will cost us Dumba, and even then I still don't think Dubas would pull the trigger.

Interestingly, Michael Russo mentioned in his podcast that "the Wild have a way to get Nylander" and mentioned Spurgeon and Dumba as a potential target for the Leafs. I'm not sure if that was him speculating of if he has some steam on that front. I wouldn't trade Dumba for him, but I think a trade involving Spurgeon (with an extension) with additional pieces on both sides makes a lot of sense for both teams.

Heres the podcast, Nylander bit happens around 26:55. For context, they were talking about Spurgeon's trade value and whether or not we should sign him for an extension. Russo starts by saying it all depends on what we could get for Spurgeon.

I know the contracts are low and kinda short but did that for simplicity sake. I would much rather have Marner or KK then Nylander. They are younger and with how things went down this year Nylander seems like he may be a little more diva and his play may not totally make up for that. Dubas has to do something though the Leafs are in serious cap hell and even with the cap going up there is no way he can pay everyone plus his most of his D core are UFA's.

Also forgot to say that the Spurgeon trade does require him to re-sign with the Leafs.

I've watched a lot of Leafs games and Nylander has been a lot better than the raw numbers indicate. He drives play a lot like Granlund did with his playmaking. Plus, he can play center where Marner never has at the professional level. Everyone knew Nylander would struggle his first month back in the NHL, even though these guys are great athletes it takes some time to get their legs and hands back after an offseason.

You're right, the Leafs have to trade some guys to make cap space, but the Leafs aren't trading Marner, period. They'll trade away guys like Zaitsev, Brown, Hyman, or even Kadri to do that. You don't trade away ~100 point 21 year olds especially not for a 29 year old defenseman. Again, I'm a huge Spurgeon fan and he does have a lot of value, but he doesn't have enough value to get a guy like Marner.

Yea I figured that's why I called this post "might be crazy lol". Also Russo is not really a Nylander fan he even compared him to Fiala and said that he scores more but that his play reminds him of Fiala.
