Description
Ok first of all, I realize that we are lacking defensemen. Yes that is something the New Jersey Devils organization needs to help upon but do we need to keep Damon Severson? With all he is our best offensive defensemen on paper with 37 points in 73 games which for a dman isn’t bad. But we need is someone to help us keep the puck outta the net. He is analytically our worst defensemen this year with a plus minus of -20. Let’s be honest year our wing depth is weak. Hall Palmieri highlight our wings but other then that we have Coleman and Bratt who are good but are solid 3 lines and potential 2nd. We need someone with immediate impact though. Look at our wings and you don’t see a lot of names really pop out such as a team like Tampa with Kucherov Gourde Joesph Miller Palat And Killorn. That is why we make this deal. First of all we deal Severson who still has the potential to be a great defensemen with lots of value still. Second we acquire a guy who can help us put pucks in the net which we still need help with. LA needs youth with defense. Toffoli has plummeted in value with having one of his worst career years ever. If we do pull the trigger we can also acquire some picks back while it varies it won’t be a first but some shiny picks within.
If there is another winger who could be interesting definitely jump in. In all this benefits both teams has we acquire a winger who can prove that can score 20 goals a year and they acquire a young defenseman who can be the backbone aside from doughty. Also to put in notice we have guys such as Ty Smith, Rielly Walsh, Jeremy Davies, Matt Hellickson And more coming up plus Byram potentially.

If youre trading Severson, then you are blowing it up and are better off just taking picks and prospects then a reclamation project who is one of the worst skaters in the league. That trade makes them worse immediately so just go for a 1st and an A prospect

From a Kings fan, that's an interesting player trade. The picks are off, but there's a solid foundation there. I'm not too familiar with Severson, but you spend a few sentences calling him "analytically our worst defenseman" of the Devils. But because he can bounce back he's worth more. Not sure why the same reasoning wouldn't apply to Toffoli. He's a proven top-6 winger, only 26, having his worst year in what is coincidentally the worst year for LA since the early 2000's. Toffoli's underlying stats are -actually- pretty decent, suggesting that this year is an anomaly to be blamed on "puck luck", the rest of the team being bad, or a combination of the two.

RHD are generally more valued than wingers, I'll give you that. And there's control in Severson's contract, with it being set at 4mil for the next while. Unfortunately, control isn't necessarily a good thing with the expansion draft coming up as it'll force them to protect a player that hasn't grown through their system, if they don't want to lose the value of the trade.

Overall, I sincerely doubt the Kings are looking to get rid of their 2nd rounder (likely 33rd pick), unless they are using it and Toronto's 1st round to move up in the draft. Maybe change your picks to the two 3rds (LA and WSH).

Agree with everything you say here. One thing you didn't is that Toffoli is now one of the Kings' four primary penalty killing forwards, so his game is becoming much more all-around despite his offensive struggles this year.

With all the cap hell some teams will be in this summer and the cap space we have, Ray should be able to cash in on some of this. TBL/TML/WPG/LVK all could use our help. Taking on some bad contract with a decent piece should be one of the things he does. Sevs ain't the greatest, but most Devs fans would move almost everyone else but him. A young cheap rhd for a handful of yrs., ask TMLs they'd love him.
They need addition of good D not subtraction. If Toffoli is a piece we like LAKs are rebuilding too, picks would probably do it

Severson is playing about 22 mins a night on the fourth worst team in the NHL, with Hall out since Christmas, and the Devils looking like an AHL roster since the TDL. Not sure if this season is the best to judge him on. I do not know if he will be a top 2 D-man but defensive help is needed more than wingers.
