WSH
  1. Ceci, Cody
  2. Dzingel, Ryan
Détails additionnels:
Ceci and Burakovsky are both RFA's who could use a change of scenery. Ceci probably has a bit of higher value but also a higher cap hit. Definitely more useful for the caps in the playoffs.
OTT
  1. Burakovsky, André
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2019 (WSH)
Détails additionnels:
If Dzingel isn't quite worth the 1st, the difference between Ceci and Burakovsky probably makes up the difference between Dzingel and the 1st.

Because points tell the story of a dman's game. I'd be pissed if Capitals spent assets on Ceci.

Yeh Ceci has more point, but Ceci has also played over the double the amount of time that Burakovsky has. I think this would be a good trade for the sens.

No, points don't tell the story of the game. But when comparing a struggling winger and a struggling defenseman, and the defenseman has more, that's a pretty big deal. Especially considering he's not primarily an offensive defenseman and gets no powerplay time. And Ceci, although not always amazing in his own end, also brings more defensively than Burakovsky and is useful on the PK.

Burakovsky's lack of production led to his minimal ice time, and not the other way around. I think it's genuinely a fair trade. Ceci is more useful for the caps RIGHT NOW than Burakovsky. He's an RFA, if you don't like him, flip him at the draft and get whatever you would have gotten for burakovsky for him. And then Dzingel for a late 1st seems fair. Maybe swap it with a 2nd and a good (not great) prospect.

Let's just put to this to rest right now. Burakovsky is not struggling now and is playing good hockey for about a month and a half. He struggled in November and December. He's been consistently fine and using his speed effectively and has gotten rewarded with some points. He's probably Caps best third liner right now and is driving play.

Caps don't have interest in Ceci. Period. He's not good in his own end and Caps already have guys as struggling to find their game (Orlov, Niskanen, and Kempny). All three of those guys are considerably better than Ceci. Not to mention that Ceci is expensive and not somone Caps have the interest or means to qualify this offseason.

Meanwhile, there is a strong chance Burakovsky is not qualified and signs a cheaper bridge for next year. Caps have done it with DSP and Connolly recently. Burakovsky is popular in the room, loves DC, and is motivated to stay.

Burakovsky is a year younger than Ceci with 37 more NHL points, counting playoffs in less than half as many minutes. His plus/minus is better by 83.

The main reason the Caps cannot do this is, as you said, cap hits. They have almost exactly zero space (assuming Oshie isn't on LTIR).

If you want to get rid of the pick, and switch Ceci to any decent defenseman under $1M, then it's actually possible for Washington, under the salary cap, and they just have to compare the value to other offers on here, like Burakovsky for Nichushkin and a 2nd, or Burakovsky and a 2nd for Tatar, or Burakovsky for Nyquist, etc.

But from Ottawa's perspective, a Caps fan this morning posted Bowey and a 2nd for just Dzingel. Bowey is a decent 24 year old RHD, who hasn't gotten big minutes behind Carlson and Niskanen, but has done really well in the opportunities he's gotten. The Caps have a few LHD who can take his spot, most notably Christian Djoos who played 3RD through last year's playoffs, so they can afford to move him. I think that's a long term win for Ottawa because this is Dzingel's only year on a 50 point pace, whereas Bowey was a consistent point per game defenseman in juniors, and should keep improving his offense, in the NHL.

Also because the Caps have so little cap space that pretty much any rental they get ends up a UFA in July.

Next summer, I could almost imagine Niskanen for Ceci looking fair, but Niskanen has an NTC, so it would depend a lot of the kinds of moves Ottawa makes before that, and where Niskanen thinks they're headed as a franchise. If they're still having a yardsale, it's unlikely to tempt him. If they've pulled in a bunch of good young players, and just need a leader to steer the ship, it might be possible that Washington overlooks the difference in some defensive stats as a way to get younger for a similar cap hit. But not at this particular deadline.

Care to elaborate? What on earth do you think Burakovsky is worth?

Trade value is socially constructed. He started this year with two points in sixteen games, and the entire Caps bandwagon, filled with a bunch of new hockey fans off of a first ever Cup win, tried to trade him all at once, and overall, we did a bad job of it. So his perceived trade value is currently zero on this board, just like Ceci's. You are trying to be fair, I'm sure.

Last week, Burakovsky finished a lucky streak with 7 even strength points in nine games. If he could keep up that pace all year, he'd have 42 ESP so far this year. Duchene has 46.

Burakovsky is not going to outscore Duchene for at least a couple years, but he is 11th in career points in the draft class of 2013, and 7th in even strength goals, just ahead of Drouin, Mantha, and Domi: http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?aggregate=1&report=skatergoals&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20122013&seasonTo=20182019&gameType=2&draftYear=2013&position=F&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=evGoals,goals

I still want to hear @ArlingtonCaps answer, but I'll go with: he's a good fit on the Caps' 3rd line and they can easily afford his Q.O. if he keeps playing like this.

If Dzingel wanted to sign his next contract at 4M/year to stay in Washington, Burakovsky for Dzingel would be fine, for any number of years between two and seven.

But Dzingel coming to Washington could end up on Backstrom's line, and keep up the 60 point pace he's on, before hitting unrestricted free agency. He might get 6M somewhere next year, and that means he's not in Washington.
