Description
With the Grubranson trade last night, it gives a better picture of what the trade market is for a young dman. I think Brodin is kind of a poor mans Grubranson, and is a top 4 shut down guy. Grubranson was traded for a 19 year old center who had 18 points last year, and a 2nd rounder. So, I think Spooner (51 points) at age 24 and a 2nd rounder should be sufficient for Brodin. ------------------------------------------------------The Shattenkirk trade is tougher to handicap, and not sure if the Bruins will be able to pull it off. The Blues definitely need salary cap help as they need to sign Schwartz to a bridge deal, and Backes is going to get a raise (I don't think there is any chance of him leaving - he seems like the face of their franchise and the Blues will give him something close to what he would get on the market). Which means they'll probably lose Brouwer to free agency, and Pastranak would pick up his production at $925k. And Miller would plug into their d-core at a cheap price. This would also allow them to sign other guys. And of course 2 1st rounders in the upcoming draft. However, I think Edmonton is going to come in with a big offer. But what could blow up Edmonton's offer is Shattenkirk not wanting to sign there after next year. Not sure Edmonton would give up the 4th pick and Eberle for one year of Shattenkirk. Although, Edmonton is desperate for the playoffs, so who knows what their mindset is. My prediction is Edmonton gives up the 4th pick and Eberle for Shattenkirk and sign Shattenkirk to a long term deal immediately following the trade (maybe 8 years $70-$80 mill.). I think he would get over playing in Edmonton with that offer. Although he would regret it in 3-4 years. Keep in mind Chiarelli signed Chara with the Bruins to $7 mill per year when the salary cap was only $39 million, so he is not shy to set the market on a top end dman. So including Shattenkirk below is wishful thinking.

Still not much money left next year when Marchand and some others contract expire. IMO that's a severe overpayment for 1 year of Shattenkirk. No harm in waiting a year. If it's true that Shattenkirk want to play on the East Coast, their aren't many teams that have the cap to sign him, so if the Bruins really want him, they will be in position to sign him. So I'm saying "Patience". Of course I'm a Leaf fan and that's what I've doing for what 50 years.

Not necessarily true. They would have $17 mill in space in 17-18 with only a few holes to fill. If you got Marchand & Shattenkirk at $14-$15 mill of that $17 mill, you could buy out Hayes, and have $4-$5 mill in space to fill in the 3 or 4 roster spots that you have remaining. Getting rid of Spooner and Pastranak prevents you from having to sign any bridge deals next year. I think if you trade for Shattenkirk this off-season you sign him to a LTD this off-season, and that is what I assumed in that trade. I wouldn't give up all that for a 1 year rental.

Palhal - That trade proposal is based upon it being a trade & sign. Most likely, any team looking to trade for Shattenkirk will be able to negotiate with him on a deal prior to the two teams pulling the trigger on the deal. If there is no agreement between Shattenkirk and the team on a deal, then there is no trade. Like I mentioned above, I don't think the Bruins have the assets to pull it off, unless Shattenkirk really wants to come to Boston. In which case, just sit back and wait for him next off-season as a UFA. But, I don't see that happening.

Bruins_Fan1990 - what do you think you're going to get Shattenkirk for? Edmonton has the #4 pick and 3 stud NHL players for St. Louis to pick from (Hall, Eberle, or RNH). I'm all on ears on your recommendations of beating a deal from Edmonton.

Ninja - Ha. I'm interested in hearing what you think the 14th and 29th pick in the draft equate to in value. The offer the Bruins are going to have to beat is the #4 pick and Eberle from Edmonton. I'd like to hear what your offer would be? Pastranak is a good player, but he's not a stud. Also, Dougie Hamilton cost a 1st rounder, and 2 2nd rounders. Shattenkirk is a better player than Hamilton. I think Boston fans are delusional in over-valuing their trade pieces of picks and young guys. They don't have anything special. The 1st round pick they have from SJ this year is basically a 2nd rounder. And Spooner and Pastranak are very good - but not great.

Heres an idea, if its going to cost that much DONT trade for him? We'd be better off signing free agents.
