Horton will need to be traded as the Leafs will be cap non-compliant before they can stash him on LTIR. Seems as though the Leafs have soured on Liljegren anyways

You really don't understand LTIR do you? Why would the Leaf give away Liljegren for nothing when Horton doesn't hurt their cap at all.

LMAO on Leafs deal.. soured out on Liljegren? He is 19 and playing top top minutes in every situation in AHL which is a rarity and I dont know if it ever happened.. just no.. Horton can be put on LTIR before the season but it would not be able to be get off LTIR afterwards.. Chicago had this dillema with Hossa deal last year. They couldve put him on LTIR in preseason and he would not be able to go back to normal or put him on LTIR after first game or something like that it is and would be able to get him off that. Horton IS going to be put soon on LTIR. Also you can be about 10% up on cap during offseason.. so no.. that does not happen.

Actually you dont. They need to be under the cap before the league season starts. They cannot put Horton on the LTIR before hand so unless they dont sign Marner/Kapanen and their other RFAs before they would need to move the contract. Same reason Hossa and Datsyuk got traded to Arizona because the Wings and Blackhawks needed their contracts off the books before the league season started. Nice try though

You've confirmed what I said that you don't know much about LTIR and the cap. LTIR players don't hurt the cap at all. The only thing they affect...sometimes is when a teams bonuses can be paid. And your Datsyuk statement, really? Datsyuk had retired from the NHL, he wasn't on LTIR. He was plus 35 cap hit. The reason the Hawks traded Hossa, was there might be the danger that Hossa and "his infection" is deemed at some time a non LTIR. Arizona can afford his cap hit and Hossa stays retired with no money payout if was ever deemed fit. Hawks belleve they couldn't afford his future cap hit, if he ever returned. Nice try though.

So many other things that can happen for the Leafs between now and then to ensure they are cap compliant. Moving a right shot D prospect for nothing just to clear an LTIR contract is the absolute last thing on that list.

Sammy actual the 10% rule doesn't apply to LTIR. Teams can "up" their cap for amount of cap an LTIR player takes up. The 10% rule was put in for two reasons. To allow teams to sign UFA and RFA during the summer and it allows them time to make trades or whatever to be cap compliant October 1. The other reason was to prevent teams from "stacking" their AHL teams with NHL paid contracts...one way contracts .
