The fact that Neilsen is on pace for 45 points means Detroit would be losing this trade badly.

But not in Sekera’s case. That’s why I said what I did. I’m saying you’re wrong, and he’s a good defenseman. No matter how many ways you say it.

DET does this for long term cap relief. Here are the cap implications broken down year by year:

DET saves $975k in 2019-20
DET saves $3 mil in 2020-21
DET saves $8.5 mil in 2021-22
DET gains $1.75 mil in 2022-23

The savings in year 2021-22 probably makes this a worthwhile trade for the Wings. That $8.5 mil gives them a lot more room to sign/trade for players. The $1.75 mil they lose in the following year wouldn’t be an issue to navigate around.

Now you can explain why you think it’s so terrible for Detroit..

Not a single one of the 6 players involved in this trade has any value by themselves, so I’m not sure what reasoning any of you have to say this is such a terrible trade for Detroit. Like honestly, you would want to trade for Nielsen, Abdelkader, or DeKeyser and give up anything of value? Because I wouldn’t. What would you give up?

Look at my response to @aedoran. The cap savings for Detroit would be the reason for DET to make this trade.

Lucic is a psycho, Edmonton last playoff series he went down the entire hand shake line saying "I'm going to f@#king kill you." Why do you think Edmonton is in such a hurry to get rid him? He really is just a bully.
Sekera ruptured his achilles tendon in the offseason rehabbing from a AC tear. So in the last 2 years he has 36 games in the NHL all before his ACL tear and 2 AHL games this year. He is currently out indefinitely.
Edmonton has buried Spooners contract. That means they have basically given up on him and sent him to the AHL usually till the buyout window opens. Buried his cap hit goes from $4m to just over $2m. and to bury him he had to clear waivers meaning every NHL had a chance to claim him before he cleared on 01/22/2019 .

The 3 players Detroit is giving for the Lucic all have no trade clauses. I have no idea if Neilson would waive to go Edmonton. But Dekeyser and Abs they are both the area I seriously doubt either of them would waive for Edmonton. I think Kronwall retires at the end of the season and I can only hope he takes Ericsson back to Sweden with him. I don’t even care if eat the full cap hit It’s only for year and to free up that roster spot. I also think Jensen gets traded his value is never going to be higher. That leaves Green, Daley, and Cholowski Making DeKeyser our best defensive defenseman. Yeah his contract is high but he also has value other than his play when DeKeyser and Green are in the lineup they are constantly helping the younger guys.

One last thing: I like Sekera and think he is a good defenseman and I hope he makes it back to the NHL and is able to continue his career. It sucks seeing a player having to retire like that.

EDM wants to get rid of Lucic because he is a bad hockey player on a bad contract. Same reason I wish to get rid of Nielsen, Abby, and DDK.
Yes Sekera has been hurt a lot, with pretty serious injuries too. Which is another reason I would take him back in this trade - he could possibly be another candidate for LTIR like Frans and Z, which would give us even more cap space if that were the case.
Sekera and Spooner have shorter contracts then Nielsen and DDK, giving us more cap space which I which I laid out already, and that’s one more reason to make the trade.
As far as the NTC go, you’re probably right, none of them would waive. But I wasn’t concerned about that when I made this team.
Ericsson isn’t going to Sweden next year but I digress...
As I stated before, I think all 6 of the players in the trade are pretty much useless and probably all have negative value.
So what I've gathered is that you think DeKeyser is more valuable than I think he is. That’s you’re own opinion.

That all makes sense we do need to get rid of most of the bad contracts but we don't have to do it in one offseason. We might make the playoffs next year we might not its why
Holland is so nonchalant about having to trade any one. We have all next season to do that as well and we are probably going to be sellers next trade deadline. After that we might be in a position to make a splash in free agency in the summer. One thing I've noticed the guys who most of us think are bad GMs all have tried to rush the process and more often than not it ends really bad. It took Holland longer than wanted to decide that we needed a rebuild and what type we needed but he has a plan and no matter what people have said he has stuck with it. I haven't been a Holland fan for a while but if it keeps going well I will happily eat my words.
