What makes you say that? For this trade, you can put any approx. $1mm forward in that you like (CAR might have to retain more depending on which one), I just went with DSP because I don't think he will be in a WSH uniform next year no matter what, and he could be an easier sell for a team to take than one of the younger forwards because of his experience and playoff potential.

Carolina is in the hunt. They won't sell Ferland short of significant overpayment. This ain't it chief.

Those 6 assets (Smith-Pelly, Bowey, Burakovsky, Vanecek, two 3rds) might get Ferland. They would not get Faulk. They really wouldn't get Faulk with Retention. Wouldn't be in the ballpark for Ferland and Faulk with retention.

A 4th line UFA, a 3rd pair meh D, a lazy one dimensional RFA 3rd liner, a D level goalie prospect, and two 90-is picks. That's a $5 grab bag at a church fair, not something that is netting Faulk with retention plus Ferland.

1) I kind of think this would be an overpayment myself, but it could very well push the Caps back to contention, so could be worth losing the assets. What do you think I’m not valuing correctly here? Genuine question.

2) Is there a deal out there similar to this one (3rd line scoring thread & marked defensive upgrade) the Caps could reasonably go after?

I mean, that seems like a little bit of an exaggeration...Ferland would be a rental and is only on pace to outscore Brett Connolly by 6 points this year, and that would be a career high for him. He’s not exactly Bobby Hull. Faulk will likely set career lows in points and possession metrics this year for a full season of play and even though I don’t put a lot of stock in +/-, he’s a career -106 defensemen. If you want to tell me the value is off on this, I buy that, but I don’t think it’s quite as big a divide as you make it out to be...

1. I think it's more that Carolina is in the hunt and HAS to overvalue him. He's an important role player for them, so anything short of either a 1st and an okay prospect or a 2nd and a good cheap forward, I just don't think they do it. Everyone is basically saying Carolina values him AS a rental, because they are pretty cheap and Ferland wants a stupid contract.

Faulk they might move for actual help. But your value just isn't there. Everyone you offer don't really register much value. Someone said it above me, it's like a grab bag of mediocre assets. Vaneck is the best piece, but goaltenders have the least amount of value of any position, right or wrong.

2. Yup, but not a ton available. Also why Ferland is sought after. Sure, there's guys like Bennett or Lemieux (third one guys who are savages and have a little bit of scoring touch, definitely responsbile). But these guys arent really being moved because their cheap and really useful.

You'll notice the good teams in the league tend to have cheap contracts in the bottom 6. Good teams need that! They also don't ever move those guys. So you tend to see mediocre or bad teams with bloated bottom 6 guys, contract wise.

A guy I think would do absolute wonders for Caps is Brandon Sutter. He does A LOT for the Canucks and while he doesnt score a lot, he does get shutdown minutes (although less than in prevous years) and he can PK. He can play LW or C if you need faceoff help. Just a ton there I really like. But he is expensive and he has a few years left.

Yep.

Goldobin and Hutton?

Coleman and Mueller, or, cheaper, Wood and Mueller.

Do they need more scoring?

I actually don't think they need more scoring, personally - if you look at their last 8 losses, they have given up 40 goals (that's 5/game for you English majors out there), and one of those losses was the Bruins 1-0 loss that skews the average lower. I think the Caps need defensive help, BADLY.

Over that same span, the Caps scored 21 goals, which is 2-3 per game. That should be good enough to win games with a solid defense. Not all games, sure, but if you score 6 goals in a game and can't win, that's a defensive problem.
