He's also not signing for $3.75M for 4 years either. He's had 1 season in the league. At which he's put up 15G and 15A. Let's say he finished at 20G and 20A in the full season. Connor Brown had 20G and 16A in his first full season after being up and down like Kapanen. Brown got $2.1M for 3 years. Kapanen will probably get a bit more than that since he's seen has having more upside that Brown. Realistically, Kapanen signs a bridge deal of 2-3 years between $2.75-$3.25M.. that's still manageable under the cap.
Also, Johnsson isn't being moved for that low of a package. He'd be similar to Brown's deal as well. Having 1 year in the league and he's a bit older. Wouldn't be shocked to see him around the $2.1M for 3 years that Brown signed for too.. which is manageable again. That's not just coming from a Leafs fan. That's using comparables and what the market value of each player is.
