I think for the most part these are fair trades actually.

NYR and FLA can sign both Panarin and Bobrovsky for free come July 1st. Neither is giving up assets for them.

I conquer--both deals cover the short and long-term needs of all three teams.

They are getting other assets with them, and its a really cheap price if you consider them rentals. Having them on your team for 3 months can really convince a player to sign with them, they are essentially paying for a huge one-up on other teams interested in signing them.

I don't get these arguments about getting them free. Look if any player gets to FA, any team could get them. For instance what if, just saying, Jackets keep Panarin and he indeed does sign an extension because he can get 8 years and say 10 or 11 mil more. NYR would in this case look foolish for not striking a deal. There is a big advantage to trading for him prior to the TDL, and that is the 8th year option. Just because a player is wanting to get to FA doesn't mean teams won't try to acquire him via trade first.
