Have to trade something to be able to compete for the cup for the next few years. The Leafs lose two prohibitive contracts while improving the defense now.

Sandin is untouchable unless similarly great prospect is coming back. Zaitsev and pick for Tanev.. Marleau has zero reasons waiving for Vancouver. But Im sure Edlers value is high so try different team. He can be a great addition to team like Buffalo.

Would you give up Sandin to win a cup?

Even if Marleu ever agreed to waive his NMC...the concept that the Leafs would have to pay a team to take him seems very flawed to me. People can debate Zaitsev all they want. I think he's close to neutral value..again, meaning the leafs don't have to pay a team to take him.

I don't have a problem with including Sandin in a deal for defensive help...but IMO this deal doesn't move the needle enough to justify losing him.

I would not give up Sandin who might be essential in winning cup later. We have plenty of time with young core. Chicago havent traded Duncan Keith to win cup now then and they won it 3 times.. almost every stanley cup winner has the core drafted by them and not traded for. And Sandin is part of the future core with his great display of skills.

Why would you assume Marleau, who chose Toronto, won a NMC and has been chasing a cup for 21 years, would waive his clause to go to Vancouver?

Your analogy is flawed. Keith was added before Toews & Kane. He wasn't a future core member.

The team has the opportunity to win today. Even if Sandin pans out, other players would need to stay healthy and play at a consistent level. If nothing is done, Gardiner will be gone and others will not be resigned by the time Sandin makes the club.

Frankly, there is no basis for this assumption. If the team asked him to waive, conceivably, he would prefer to go to a team that wanted him as opposed to a team that wanted to trade him.

It was just an example of why you dont trade your top prospects before they are able to showcase themselves. We have a chance to win cup now thats why I see picks in 2019 and 2020 being moved for upgrades but not prospects.. why? Shannys analogy is not just to have one succesful window but constant success with drafting and re-changing core players as time progresses, thats why I see them drafting quality centerman within 3yrs to be able to step in once Kadri is older and not so effective. We have chance to win now. SURE we do, but rather than D prospects I would prefer moving picks, even 1st rounder in 2019 or 2020.

The team is also getting cap flexibility. By doing this trade, the Leafs would be cup contenders for the next few years.

If you would rather move picks, then I think the trade is Tanev (50% salary retained) + Edler for Zaitsev + 2019 First & Second + B level prospect. Would you do that?

I would not do Edler part. I feel like it would not get good results. Dont know why but I feel like it. What about Tanev (approximately 1mil retained) for Zaitsev, 2nd and Timashev (who is B level prospect), I have gut feeling that Edler is going to end up like Eric Staal in Rangers. Just gut feeling, no facts on why..

I would definitely consider that deal. Not sure about Timashev. How about Druzi?

Durzi is hometown boy, I kind feel he is being part of "dubas untouchable" part of team of homegrown diehard leafs fans. What about Hollowell or Räsänen?

I agree with this....and it wasn't flawed thinking looking to pick up bigger contracts off the leafs...I just don't think the two teams line up as decent trading partners

Maybe future partner for hughes who is smaller and Rasanen is 6ft7 or something like that. It would be fair.

Any possibility that Dubas could take it instead and gives Marner for Grandlund
