I think the Leafs might have add more...especially if Petrovic and Brouwer are playing well enough to contribute at an NHL level. But your thought certainly is good, especially if Florida thinks they are out of the playoff hunt.

I wonder if Dubas will learn, possibly adapt, from watching how Lou handled the past two trade deadlines. For the 2017 playoffs, they added Boyle and it was probably the right call as they sneaked in as a wild card team and faced the top-seeded Caps. Last year, despite the Leafs being comfortably in a playoff spot, Lou added the minimum acquiring Pleckanec. The Leafs defence was heavily exposed against the Bruins in that series and many fans wondered why it wasn't addressed at the deadline. I get Lou not mortgaging the future, but Pleckanec was not going to put the Leafs over the top and knock out the Bruins and Lightning. So what does Dubas do? Does he go more aggressive and add 2-3 players? Does he acquire a right handed defenceman that the fans have been asking for 2 years now? A lot can change from now until April, but the Leafs have to start thinking how they'll get out of the first round. And if they do get out of the first round, how do you best compete against Tampa who is an absolute WAGON right now.

I like what you put together here. And my answer to your question is.. i dont know. If Dubas and co think the have a real and legitimate shot this year then I think they have no choice to but to trade for that RHD, a heavy left wing and maybe a back up goalie. If they think that their best shot is 2 or 3 years out I think they'll be patient, try to make some depths adds, roll the dice, see how far they get in the playoffs and chaulk it up to a learning experience and part of the process. If I had to guess, Id say they're bidding their time and they'll make a real push in a couple years. But if the do decide to go all in this year, and aquire the pieces that they need, then its my take that they could have a real shot

I really wonder how the Leafs was heavily esposed last playoffs. They were tied going into the third period of game seven. Two bone head plays by Gardiner and an empty netter in the third period make the score. 7-4. If Gardiner makes those same plays at LHD, it wouldn't matter if his partner was Karlsson, Doughty or Weber.
Babcock's incessant line matching and being poor at it, was the probably more of a reason for the defeat that the Men.

You've really started to shift my opinion of this situation over the last year, Pal. As much as I think there is room for improvement on the right side I'm coming to think this is more about Babcocks systems and his reluctance to adapt.

When I watch the games where the leafs have defensive issues, I'm seeing that succesful teams target our right side with dump ins and send 1 to 2 forecheckers. Usually, when we're doing well the rd send the puck to the ld and Mo, Gards or Dermott are tasked with getting the puck up ice, either by carrying, or too often, with a stretch pass. When it works it works. But when the rd are under pressure they often panic and try to flip it out or dont have players around for a short outlet pass, because they forwards have blown the zone. As much as i think it will help to look at improvements to the rd, I think an easier fix is for Babs to make some changes to his approach. It seems to be a systems issue at this point.
