Description
columbus trade happens mid season the concept behind is is nylander is a semi replacement for panarin and a player they have control of for multiple years a pending ufa in gardiner they can probably resign and a first.
panarin->nylander + 1st
nutivaara->gardiner

the second is a cap dumb basically the will most likely have to move either zaitsev or marleau if they intend to sign a forward either willy or panarin in this case to something above 8 mil. with this aswell the leafs will have a fair bit of cap space the year of 20-21 offseason once marleau is off the books to sign a d man. would be willing to add futures on both trades to make them happen. players I would be willing to add include - picks 2-7, bracco, grundestrom, rosen, durzi etc the only untouchables in my opinion are sandin and liljegren.

    A big problem with this is that Panarin contract. He's going to be north of $9M and I could see him surpassing Ovi's contract. On Toronto Panarin is probably a 90-100 point player.

    yea but the trade is a sign and trade I wouldnt touch panarin unless the leafs signed him on spot for 8.5 what a playmaking just under ppg winger is worth comparing to wheeler.

    its a cap dump for the leafs but zaitsev is still a solid player that would entice a team like the rangers. if anything the pick can be made like a 4th but its basically a 3rd line penalty killer and a number 4 defenceman on a bad but not terrible deal for a middle 6 forward and a pick.
    re
    fast retained so his cap hit is 1.5 mil (like 275000 retained) and a 4th for zaitsev and brown. if I were the rangers i would jump all over that. win for both teams in imo

    I know, and you're right the Leafs shouldn't touch him if he didn't sign a contract but I just don't think Panarin would sign that deal. I could see some teams willing to pay him $2M more than that in free agency. Does he value money or winning a cup more? Who knows.

    Wheeler isn't a good comparable since he's 32 while Panarin is 27. A 5 year gap is a lot and Panarin is in his prime years while Wheeler is nearing the end of that period. That 5 year gap alone makes Panarin at least $1M more than Wheeler, if not even more.

    Id rather sign Nylander for 8.5 than Panarin (not that i think Panarin will even settle for 8.5)(and i don't want Nylander at 8.5 either.) Nylander on a 7 year deal with be throughout his prime. Panarin will start to decline before half the deal is done. I'll keep our first, keep Gardiner and let him walk, or trade him for picks and prospects before i do this deal.

    If im Columbus and i know Panarin is leaving at the end of the year i would do this deal in a second.

    I somewhat disagree as i believe wheeler is a better player which makes up for the gap. His comparables for me are he's not as good as sequin and isnt a center and seguin signed just under 10. I would use kuch but his was tooo team friendly. Draisaitl signed at the same cap hit but is a center and isnt quite as good. 36 goal scorer JVR signed for 7 mil in the ufa market. pacioretty signed for 7 mil and is seen as a 30 goal scoring winger at the time of the signing. panarin also said he wanted to play in a big market and whats a bigger market than toronto. I think he would take the deal if not i would push him to 9 mil max and move one of johnsson or lindholm for a player on a minimum contract to fit under.

    NYR pass easily. Zaitsev is a cap dump and browns a 3rd liner which fast is essentially so nyr are giving up a 2nd and holding back 500k to take on a 4-4.5m for the same player or worst. Yeah no

    exactly why I think its a good deal. I dont want to lose gardiner for nothing this offseason and panarin is a better player than willy. on columbus he is the best offesive player on the jackets and puts up ppg. on the leafs he would be tied with marner for 3rd and playing with matthews would be scary. With the zaitsev trade happening in the offseason i think that trade would turn the leafs into the best team in the league at the time.

    I don't think there is going to be any Zaitsev trade coming anytime soon. Signing Panarin at 8.5 puts us in cap hell. Id rather have Nylander at approximately 6.5 for his prime years than Panarin on a deal that goes into his mid 30s. Having Nylander in his prime extends our cap window. It sucks losing Gardiner for nothing but LHD is where we have a some depth to replace him with. JT is in his prime right now, we cant afford to trade Gardiner for futures, so i've accepted he will be here for his last cup run with us then move on for more money.

    Am I the only one that would prefer a 22 year old with Panarin upside than Panarin himself. He is realistically 4 years away from a noticeable decline in production whereas Nylander, in theory is 8.

    I mean, I guess, but I would much rather see Gardiner go than us over pay him. And Panarin probably wont resign here anyway.
