so I'm pretty critical of all the wacky leaf fans thinking they're going to get gretzky for nylander in trade, but this? wow. Alec Martinez, a backup goalie and a pick....that seems a bit light on the value side, don't you think?

    Thanks for the response!

LAK may have to give up another prospect in the deal and I'm not completely attached to the trade that I posted here. My logic on the trade is that TOR is looking to another another piece on the back end. Martinez has term on his contact and has a relatively low contract (both key things that TOR is looking for, while also planning to resign Matthews and Marner) and Budaj is a reliable back up that has playoff experience, compared to Sparks, who has been spotty so far this year. And when you thrown in a 2019 1st round pick it, the trade seems to balance out a bit more.

My initial thoughts were to include Toffoli, but I know LAK would really like to keep him if they could get him and Nylander on the same line as Kopitar. But he may have to be dealt to complete the trade.

What changes would you make or who would you throw in, in the deal? Thanks!

Brown and Iafallo aren't going anywhere. The former because no one will give up anything of value for his contract, and the Kings aren't going to pay to get rid of a guy whose number will hang in the rafters and will have a statue outside of Staples center when he retires. The latter because he's one of the few players on the team that have been playing well during this god-awful start, is young and relatively speedy, and will be on an affordable contract for the next several years.

    I don't think you'll get back a 2nd for rental Hagelin. 3rd or 4th maybe.

I don't think Budaj would get taken for free off waivers, let alone have any value in a trade. The only reason he was brought back to LA was to give Andreoff a chance with another NHL club, and to allow Budaj to mentor Petersen in Ontario. He's not going to be a regular starter or backup in the NHL ever again. If the Kings are able to pry away St. Louis's 1st round pick, they're not going to trade it, given where the Blues are currently in the standings. That could be a top-five overall pick. After everything that's happened, Toronto isn't going to trade away Nylander if the only NHL-ready piece coming back is Martinez. There's just so much wrong with this trade.

There's no way Buffalo trades away St. Louis's draft pick for the reasons stated above. They might trade away their own pick, but only if Buffalo feels like they're going to make a run in the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs, then a lottery pick is an overpayment for Carter.

No one will take Phaneuf's contract unless the Kings maintain a significant amount of salary or take back a bad contract in return. They're especially not trading away a player like Zacha for him.

As explained above, Kings aren't trading Brown.
