If Philly somehow goes for this, these Leafs above would be pretty darn good. I think Montreal, with Weber healthy, can afford to trade Petry for Sanheim to improve long term....

Five stars because you've improved the Leafs a lot this season, turning a twenty goal scorer into a thirty goal scorer and a top four defenseman. But only three beicause Philly says no to trading Sanheim.

Psychologists talk about "endowment effects" in trading, where people overvalue something just because it is theirs. If the Leafs had Simmonds and Sanheim, is there any chance they would trade them for Nylander?

To find out, look at last Spring's Leafs trades and all the fan trades proposed for JVR. Leafs fans really wanted to hold onto JVR for his goal scoring and his checking, regardless of the offer. Simmonds, 30, has 233 goals and 1488 hits. JVR, 29, has 201 and 591. If you liked JVR, and wouldn't rent him out at any price, you'd give a lot for a rental on Simmonds.

So imagine last Spring the Leafs trade JVR and Rielly for.... say, Zucker. Step forward? Or huge step back? I understand you believe that Nylander has more skills than Zucker, but a year ago Zucker's numbers were as good as Nylander's are now, and they've improved, so.... again, overvaluing what you have.

The problem here is the second trade. If we could have Sanheim and Simmonds for Nylander, it would be a trade to consider. Sanheim is like a Dermott but right-handed. He'd be a long-term investment, like Nylander is. Then Simmonds would give a sniper who can help during the playoffs.
