Cap predicted to go up same as last year. Do I think this likely? No. Do I think Doughty considers it with how terrible La is and how few prospects likely to help soon? Yes.

If the two games that Doughty played against the Leafs are any indication of his current play, the Leafs (or no team) will want anything to do with his 11m X 8 year contract.

He has been way too good for way too long to worry about a slow start.

It’s the way too long I worry about.... doughty is about to enter an 11m X 8 contract which carries him till age 37. He is a very physical player and I think he will start to show more wear as time gm goes on. Great player but not a good fit at that cap hit. Leafs already have issues with big money tied up over a few players. Sandin is playing so great for the marlies this season that I can’t help but think we would be better off waiting for him to mature.

Giving a 2nd and retaining $ for 8 years! Negative. No pick, no $ and add another 1st and done deal. Toronto's going deep so the 1sts are almost like high second round picks.

Need to reread the trade. LA isn’t retaining anything. As for the rest, I feel Toronto adding the 1st is an overpay. Sandin is a top prospect, and Nylander a top winger at 22.

Ah, correct. Any team is gonna have to overpay for a Norris 2x cup winner in his prime. All these deals are terrible on the back end, just how it is.

It's very likely that those 2 games, not his 10 year hall of fame career are an indication of his worth. Nice catch.

I believe Nylander and Sandin IS overpaying. Doughty might be a top defenceman still. But he might quickly become massively overpaid. I’d happily take that risk. But zero chance Toronto pays 4 first rounders for him. Especially when one is already a bone fide star, and one has shown great potential already.

Nylander is a quality forward, but he's not a top-10 winger in the NHL. Doughty is a top 5 defenseman in the league.

Kings 2nd round pick would be roughly equivalent to a Toronto 1st round pick (both in the low 30s overall), so that's not really any benefit to LA.

Rosen is an overaged prospect that hasn't cracked the NHL yet. Sandin is promising, but as a late 1st round pick, is just as likely to be a bust as he is a promising NHLer.

If Blake did that trade, he would be fired the next day. Not enough high-end talent coming back LA's direction for them to trade their best defenseman in franchise history.

Rosen is included as a prospect. Switch him for pretty much anybody but Liljegren. Get rid of the 2nd from LA and I’d still be okay. I agree Nylander isn’t yet a top 10 winger, but he has that potential, whereas Doughty has already peaked. Within a few years he’s likely to be dramatically overpaid. LA is terrible now, cap strapped, and in desperate need of a rebuild. Getting a star winger, who could be a top winger or centre plus a good prospect, a middling prospect, plus a 1st is a good deal. Wouldn’t be if LA were competing for a cup. But no way that’s happening in next 5 years. The end of Doughty’s prime.

If there's no way that the Kings will compete for a Cup in 5 years, then they shouldn't be trading for Nylander. He'll be too far into his career to build around by the time the Kings window reopens. The main pieces coming back LA's way would need to be 18-19 years old. Liljegren, Sandin, a 1st, and a conditional 2nd that turns into a 1st if the Leafs win the Cup.

It's amazing so many folks just look at the past or even the present and really don't project expectations for the future. I'm serious when I really question the future value of Doughty. Be interesting tonight seeing Karlsson. He hasn't been that good for a year now. Is it still his ankle injury?
When players hit the wall, it hit hard.

I get what you’re saying, but Doughty looks far from hitting a wall. A couple of bad games does not a wall make. He’s still putting up points, near 50% Corsi playing a lot of defensive zone starts and against top lines, and rocking a historically bad 96% PDO. His team is just sucking around him. I’ll happily take him. And 29 other teams would agree I’m sure.

I said 5 years as of now. Hence why LA might be realistic and want to jump start a rebuild. Sell off a few of their high salary guys for top prospects. Which in this case they’d be getting a top prospect, a star winger who could easily become a superstar, plus another low first. That’s a good return for a rebuild.
