Équipe: 2018-19 Penguins de Pittsburgh
Date de création initiale: 12 nov. 2018

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
We sign Nylander as part of this trade so these two transactions go hand in hand. Toronto gets a speedy veteran, the D man they need and a future young offensive player while the Pens get a guaranteed first line winger for Crosby and shed some salary while moving on from Daniel Sprong.

Even if teams weren't lining up for Nylander that package falls short, not that it matters much. If the Hurricanes are indeed willing to part with Hamilton or Faulk to get Nylander the Pens have no horse in this race.

Speedy winger not needed, maybe a good one. Maatta isn't needed at LHD. Sprong? Leafs have Bracco as a prospect.

Hamilton, yes. Faulk, no. Faulk, the Penguins could outbid with Letang. Letang's old and ridiculously injury prone, so his value doesn't come close to Nylander's and on the ice this year, having Nylander doesn't come close to Letang's value in helping the Pens ice a good playoff team, so the Penguins pass, but it's not that they couldn't make a good bid. It just isn't in their interest to do so.

While Nylander is obviously more available than other players... the Pens need to go for a LW much more than a RW. Just because you can doesn't mean that you should.

Which is why the Pens aren't in the running, they don't have the disposable pieces available that fit Toronto's needs like other teams do. That's like saying if the Pens really wanted Domi last off season they could have offered Malkin.

You joke, but in past years they'd need a guy like Malkin if it wasn't for Bolland and Hossa taking up $10 million in cap space. I still can't wrap my head around how teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago are wringing every penny out of their roster, and Arizona is just sitting in the corner with almost $15 million in dead cap this year between Bolland, Hossa, the Ribiero buyout, and retention on Mike Smith.

Smaller cities can't guarantee sell-outs every night, don't get as many advertisements, don't get as many cable viewers. They have to plan long term through the draft. They can't afford to plan around just adding proven superstars. I think at least one of those old injured Hawks is paid by insurance, so while he keeps the team over the cap floor if they rebuild this year, he's not costing the Coyotes a dime. Chicago were worried about whether the LTIR exemption format could change under a new CBA and gave up some youth and talent to dump Hossa's contract. The Coyotes are patient and I'm not sure what year they're taking aim on, but I'm sure they're taking aim on a championship. Malkin would sell a few more tickets in the meantime, but if this isn't their year, yeah, they probably pass.
