Toronto probably wouldn't want to give up Dermott, but I'd love to get him on the Wild.

Losing Dumba really hurts us, but if Nylander grows to be a PPG center I think trading for him could be worth it. Not sure if I'd do it, though, since his contract is very risky if he regressed on the Wild and couldn't handle playing center.

Edit: also, where did you hear we are interested? Our GM does not like when info is leaked, so I'd be surprised if something like that got out.

Wild would say no. Dumba was just signed to a great contract and nykander would be paid much more than him. The leafs aren’t getting anyone better than spurgeon and a 2nd from the wild

The problem with that, though, is that if Nylander demands $8M at the very least, we can't afford him if we only traded Spurgeon. We'd have to either trade the Leafs one of our wingers, or trade a forward in a separate trade. We'd be foolish to trade Zucker, so he's off the table. Parise and Koivu aren't waiving their NMC's. Greenway and Eriksson Ek are still young with room to grow so we shouldn't trade them either. Granlund is easily our most skilled forward, but he'd be an option if we got a comparable player coming back (although this probably wouldn't help with our cap situation unless we got a player on a bargain contract). Coyle is our only right shot in our top 9 so he's sort of valuable to our team in that regard, but he has not looked good these first few games which means his trade value is probably very low and the return we'd get for him wouldn't be worth it. The same goes for Niederreiter, he hasn't looked great to start the season so his trade value is also very low. That leaves Staal, but my problem trading him now would be that IF we got Nylander, we should play him at center to be Staal's eventual replacement. Nylander should get some sheltered minute to develop at center and shouldn't be handling 1C responsibilities, and neither should Koivu since he's just not productive enough offensively, so if we traded Staal, who handles the top line? Maybe at the deadline we should consider moving Staal if we're out of the playoffs, but Staal's leadership and ability to play 1C is valuable to us right now.

Spurgeon is a much better fit for the Leafs IMO, he's way better defensively than Dumba right now (although Dumba has made huge strides in his defensive game, he's about average defensively maybe slightly below average). With that said, I think the Leafs would want a younger player for Nylander so I'm not sure they'd take Spurgeon. I'd much rather give up Spurgeon than Dumba, though, since we have no replacement for Dumba in our prospect system (all of our RD project to be 2nd pairing guys at best IMO).

Awful trade for the Leafs, and one they will absolutely never make. I imagine that if Nylander does get dealt, the one way a deal including him would be for more than a 1-for-1 is if teams involved in the deal take back salary in either direction.
