theres no way Karlsson signs with any team that doesn't plan on keeping him. if you were to trade for him at the deadline he would definitely not sign an extension until at least the summer if at all. if he did decide to sign with the Jets I guarantee you that contract is not getting done without a No Movement Clause with maybe a 5 team player submitted list that Karlsson would like to go to

technically it would work but you are right that would make the jets management look like goons and the team receiving EK wouldn't want to bring on a player that doesn't want to play there so it probably still wouldn't happen. that would absolutely destroy player relations with that club. no one would sign in Winnipeg before deadlines.
