I don't know if the Pens can afford Max long term. The other issue is the hole in the defense as Benn is also a rental 1 year deal currently. Pens have no depth in the minors at defense.
Patches contract is the real issue here. he's scored 30+ goals like half a dozen times. He's a good player. Even with moving Matta and cap increase by 5 mil you are looking at 23 mil cap space., You got Gunz and Zar to pay thats like 7-8 mil. So now you are down to 15-16. with only 8 forwards, and 5 defense and 1 goalie. So you need a min 5 forwards, 2 defense, and a backup goalie. If Max wants 8+ mil a year....there is simply no way they can afford it. That leaves 7-8 million for 7 players. Even if some of them were on league min deals, you still gonna cough up 3-4 mil on a decent 3C and atleast 2 on a starting defense man. 2-3 mil for 5 players. that's really slim. Especially since some of those players gonna have to get ice time. I'n not sure they could extend him. This would be an all in this year deal.
