From outsiders perspective - Carolina trade comes down to whether 1. Carolina wants a proven player vs. stockpiling of prospects and 2. Are Oilers willing to eat salary for the next 5 years when they give up Lucic. I think Carolina could take him and flip him with a more reasonable $4mil cap hit as a result of this trade for picks/prospects but tend to think cap space is too valuable to the Oilers to retain that much.

I don't think that's allowed though is it? If you retain salary you are locked in no matter what happens with that player down the road - I don't believe there can be contingencies with retaining salary.
