Getting this team ready to be a real contender in the next 3-5 years. First though, I have to take out the garbage (contracts).

Meh, St Louis can say no to the best goalie in the league (who admittedly had a down year), a top-pairing D, and a young 1st line RW with a great contract. I thought that was fair value for an unproven starter, a deadweight contract D with injury issues, a younger top-4 D with top-2 potential and a blue-chip prospect. What would you counter with as Blues GM?

As for the Panthers, they would be giving up their young second line center, a blue chip prospect and a young second-pairing D for an elite 1st line sniper, a top pairing D (admittedly with a **** contract), and a guy who scores 20 goals in the bottom six. All that with salary retained on Pacioretty and Byron.

Both those trades help the teams win now, and they sacrifice pretty much all of the Habs' top talent in exchange for futures.

The problem is you're overvaluing the Montreal players and undervaluing everyone. When you do that, sure the trades seem fair. Price has a terrible contract. Allen has had similar stats as price with that albatross of a contract.I don't get the hype about petry. He's 30 and can barely play a full season. Hit 40 points one year. He's not a "top-pairing dman", but parayko is and he's 5 years younger. Gallagher is top 6. They didn't give up kyrou to Buffalo, they're not giving up him in this trade.

Pacs is a ufa winger looking at a pay day. Trocheck is a young top line center on a great contract. Another prospect who can be a top line center as well. A cheap top stay at home dman. Another terrible contract in Weber and a bottom 6 player.

Neither team makes these trades if you value them correctly.
