Probably won't put the kid Pelletier on a shutdown line.

Yes it does. Sutter loved his Backlund-Coleman duo, and especially now they're going to be tasked with the shutdown role.

Insider Oilers
I think the core idea what to accomplish with the trades is fine. Also seems to work out the cap issues giving roster flexibility for 22 guys.
But that's coming from a guy who dislikes Puljujarvi.

Is there an universe where this team sneaks in the playoffs
I don't think so. Their best trait seems to be offensive talent, but the problem is the average offense in the league right now is pretty damn good. They don't have anyone guaranteed to hit PPG, so while Terry and Zegras are exciting players, ultimately their difference makers don't stand out. Klingberg might give them a 50 point defenseman they didn't have last year, but these short money making deals haven't exactly worked out (Hall, Barrie). It can be difficult to play your best if you play for yourself and not for the team, kinda having 1 foot out the door already knowing you want to sign somewhere else when teams have cap space. I guess could go either way, but yeah.
I suspect they're going to have some problems with team defense as well. Quite a few guys weak in their own end. Last year they still had Lindholm and Manson as shutdown people and Getzlaf for veteran leadership. This years team is more like a team that can make some nice plays but probably give up more than they score. I still think Gibson is a great goalie but he hasn't been able to carry this team for a full season in a while.
I see a .500 pts pct team that could dip further in their record at the end if they mail it in. So basically around similar finish as last year.

Healthy Lineup
I think there's going to be casualties.
According to my calculations, the Knights can fit in 21 man roster just under the cap if they trade Smith and McNabb. Both are impending UFA's with no trade restrictions. Stephenson can move to the wing to replace Smith, and they can mix and match a new look D maybe spreading out the top 3 guys on separate pairs.
Smith and McNabb are guys that teams with playoff aspirations would take with open arms, so they're not hard to trade. Obviously Vegas would be looking at the Eastern Conference to not give their biggest rivals help, so perhaps Smith re-uniting with Gallant in NY and McNabb to Florida to bolster their depth on D as examples of what could happen. If they want to hold on to McNabb, then multiple depth forwards like Janmark and Patrick have to go. I guess best case scenario is to dump Dadonov, but he has a 10-team no trade list so it's not entirely up to Vegas.
But yeah, the current injury situation is not something they can take advantage of. Even if Eichel pulled a Kucherov and returns for game 1 of the playoffs, that's not smart considering the man hasn't played a hockey game for over a year at that point, let alone on a completely new team.
However, you never know what happens between now and the TDL. Maybe someone else gets injured who they can put on the LTIR and then that player can come back for the playoffs, so they don't have to make multiple trades. But I'd imagine that the management is prepared for that 'healthy scenario' and have identified players to move.

Finishing Touches
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>True. The 3rd might not happen this summer, but you're right about Panik being a defensively sound wing who's been productive in the past in a top-six role, and this spring showed he's ready for that again. My most recent Panik post was to trade him for a meh prospect, also to NJ, but really you're absolutely right that the only reason the Caps consider trading a guy who can play any wing spot in their middle six on a pretty good contract he just signed last year is because cap space is tight with every team, and they might be able to get even more of a steal on another UFA. If so, the return wouldn't matter much.</div></div>
Yup
I think GM's likely see him as a similar player as Namestnikov, and he only returned the Sens a 4th round pick last season. Add covid and how teams are likely to shy away from term and it gets pretty rough.
I could see a team like Buffalo make a call but i think you have to have more than one team interested if the Caps want to get something back, instead of giving him away for free, retaining or even adding a slight sweetener.

Finishing Touches
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Eli</b></div><div>Panik started slow with some kind of injury, and got just two points in his first twenty-two games, I think? Then he finished with twenty even strength points in thirty-six games. On pace for 45 even strength points, projected to 82 games..</div></div>
Thought no GM ever.
What in reality happens: "hmm, i think Panik could be a decent addition to our 3rd line, he's been fairly productive in the past, wouldn't cost many assets.. oh wait i can't be paying bottom 6 guys 2.75M a year for the next 3 seasons, moneys tight as is, and why the **** would i give the Caps anything they're forced to make a move to get under the cap. damn im smart"

Judging on what clearing out cap space for meh players cost right now, you have to give up a pick to get rid of Panik.

No way SJ does this deal. Their forward group was already lacking this past year, can't afford to give up a top 6 center who has the ability to be their best forward on any given night.
I know everybody talks about how they need a change in goal but it doesn't help if the forward group sucks ass.

Curious cap situation post Skjei trade and Kreider signing
I'll be surprised if Smith is a Ranger next season.
Even if the Rangers are unable to swing a deal they like, a buyout would save 1.5M. Cut some corners on those deals and you can probably get to 3M+space by that alone.
This is my own speculation, but i could also see Hank going somewhere else next summer. The guy is ultra competitive and already hinted at how they have to sit down next summer and talk about some things. Without speculating on any trade which is tough to make obviously, they could just buy him out so he can sign somewhere else for cheap if that's what he wants. Would save 3M for next year.

No worries, they're only facing the 4th highest scoring team in the league who put up 8 last time the Leafs played in this building.
By NHL logic, it's a shutout.

St Louis Blues 2020 - not resigning Pietrangelo version
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>suburbanrobot</b></div><div>I mean money is definitely the issue. Blues' modus operandi has been to pay players lower salaries so they can afford depth across all 4 forward lines and 3 defensive pairings. They are anti top heavy. Paying Pietrangelo $10.0 just does not fit into the organization strategy. It could be done, but it's not what the Blues do. BOS has adopted a similar strategy for whatever it's worth.
Aside from that, no question that moving Bozak is on the table.</div></div>
I get that, but usually in these situations the organization wants to make a commitment to a player who captained your team to a stanley cup & is a key core piece for the team. Exception if you will.
I could see the Blues passing on guys like Schwartz and Perron in the future if the money isn't right, avoiding the idea that the "band has to stay together", but Pietrangelo is the one guy you don't want to let go IMHO.

$$$$$
If you're interested I put together another option where the Blues do resign Petro. Wanted to run both scenarios to see how the team might play out.</div></div>
Army is not doing his job if money is an issue.
Bozak (5M) is replaceable by the likes of Sundqvist and Barbashev and backup goalies contract can't be standing in the way of signing your 1D.
Accomplish those things and i can easily see how 11M cap hit fits under the cap. Heck, after a couple RFA's i still have 4M to sign a LHD.
