The Sekera trade gives edmonton some much needed cap space while providing Montreal with an upgrade at defence. Sekera is a better LD option than any of the UFA's for MTL this year because his term is only 3 years which should give MTL enough time to develop a LD.
The Stastny signing give MTL a reliable center who can help Kotkaniemi adjust to the NHL in 2019-20. He is highly overpaid here but the term is important because MTL will have Kotkaniemi, Poehling, Danault, Evans, De la Rose, and Olafson (maybe others by then) for options at C by 2020-21.
Ideally this team plays well, but is out of a playoff spot by the TDL next season, that would allow MTL to trade Pacioretty, Vanek, and Byron for draft picks and open up a spot for Domi to move to wing.
One more year of adding to the prospect pool would be a very good thing, this is a still a very young core (Drouin, Domi, Gallagher, Danault, Mete, Lehkonen, Scherbak, De la Rose, Shaw, Juulsen) and they need time to develop into contenders anyways.
As a token of appreciation for taking Sekera and not assuming it would need to be paired with our 1st round selection i would like to offer you Milan Lucic.... as a gift
I think this is good deal where both teams could benefit. Habs rid themselves of Schlemko and upgrade him, for a couple million more per year. I think that's fine since we have a ton of probably unused cap anyway and we're potentially getting the much better dman. Edmonton kills some extra cap and gets a warm body to replace Sekera but in much more limited role. 1 year less in term also.
Win/Win. All depends on if Sekera is willing to waive.

I have considered doing a Shaw for Lucic swap, but I think it's best you keep him haha.. in all honesty he could bounce back next year though.
It's something I've thought about, I really don't know enough about Puljujarvi other than he was a 4th overall pick and has disappointed so far. There could be a Finnish connection between him and Kotkaniemi for the future though.

Not a bad deal in my eyes, however its probably not in MTL's best interest to group Patches in to a deal where teams are swapping bad money (Lucic / Shaw). They would be better suited to sell him as a individual asset and net the biggest return

Thanks for the feedback, I agree Pacioretty might be better off getting traded in his own deal, however can't complain about getting Puljujarvi as a return for patches. I like it for both teams (Lucic would probably be a good fit in Montreal with Julian).
