Just curious if Carlson is going to be a FA with no restrictions on where he signs do you think he agrees to a sign and trade where the team he is going to is giving up 3 first round picks in the deal.... does that not make the team around him weaker.

For a sign and trade to work the player being signed and traded needs to get something out of the deal.... usually it is that 8th year.

I think Carlson would say no I am not signing that deal and just go and negotiate his own deal direct with Toronto.

What am I missing?

Carlson is UFA. Why would he sign and trade? Why would he knowingly hurt his new team's asset pool instead of just signing with them weeks later? Carlson is either extending, or gone for nothing.

Why would TOR ever do this? Just sit and wait for him to become a UFA. If he really wants to play there he will sign. If he doesn't he isn't going to agree to a sign and trade.

I agree except I could see a team that is willing to overpay Carlson and agree to an 8th year then some compensation could be sent to Washington but it will be minimal.... such as a draft pick or 5-10 type of prospect.....

I think it would be Smarter for Brian MacLellan to do a Sign and Trade with John Carlson rather than let him walk away for nothing I’m thinking like a GM

Sign and trades are just wishful thinking for fans of a team that are about to lose a valuable asset for nothing via free agency.

Best you can realistically hope for in my opinion, is that a team trades for his rights prior to the free agency courting period in an attempt to get him signed before anyone else can talk to him. This would usually be done for a 2nd to 4th round pick when it comes to a high profile UFA like Carlson. The Stars did this to get Ben Bishop last off season.

Why let let your best Defenseman walk away for Nothing when you can get something for him

Of course it would be smarter for MacLellan to do this, but he can't do it on his own. He needs Carlson and the Leafs to be on board with it, and this makes no sense for either of them to do it.

The player has all the leverage in a sign and trade situation..... the player can simply go to unrestricted FA and sign where he wants..... the only thing that would entice a player is that 8th year but not at the expense of weakening the team he is agreeing to be traded to..... I think the sign and trade is similar to an mermaid...... great in your imagination but no chance in reality.

I don't think you understand, Carlson is a ufa and can walk regardless. He either signs with the capitals and stays or gets paid in free agency. This trade will not and could not happen. MacLellan can't trade Carlson for anything of value

Ha Ha dude no way Toronto gives up that much for a pending UFA in John Carlson when they can sign him for free in about a month. Jack Johnson is looking for 4 years $18 million you way underpaid him. And Detroit is close to resigning Mike Green for pretty much what you'd offer him. So Green to Washington isn't happening.

UFA sign and trades have no value which is why they don't happen. Ever. EVER.
