Eight years is probably what will happen. Six years is more ideal, and it's basically a best situation contract because he can get more ice time on Washington than on other contending teams like Vegas or Toronto. Both of those teams have other defensemen who already play a lot of minutes. Vegas plays all defensemen around twenty minutes a night, and Carlson probably couldn't get more than 22 on average there. Toronto relies on both PP units so there would be less PP time for Carlson plus Gardiner and Rielly play a lot of minutes so again Carlson couldn't get as much ice time. I see your point, but I'm hoping that Carlson will agree for less because Washington offers him a lot more than other teams. It's not a breaking point. If Carlson wants 8 years I'd give him 8 years. He's too good to let go.
