Description

Kasperi Kapanen is a promising player, certainly one of the fastest in the NHL, and to be clear I wish he'll stay in Toronto. But he could also complete a fantastic line with Finn teammates Aho and Tevarainen in Carolina. Not to mention, Kapenen's father Sami played with the Canes and had success over there.

Would the following offer be interesting for Carolina in return for RHD Pesce?
- Kapanen;
- Connor Carrick, a competent young RHD who could fill the spot left by Pesce at least temporarily;
- The rights to UFA James van Riemsdyk (yes, a team can trade for the rights to negotiate with a UFA before other teams). JvR could play close to home and with his brother.

The Leafs would fill a position of need with a solid defensive RHD, and they have depth on the wings to absorb the loss.

Sure you can trade UFA rights but they aren't really worth much. You call Carrick a competent young Dman, then why didn't the Leafs play him in a lot more? Pesce is a good at times very good RHD, on a good contract. The pieces traded for him don't come close in a trade. Canes need a centre, as the trade would be Kadri and more. These family connections don't mean much in most cases Gee you're talking about adults who many have lived away from home since the age of 16.

While I like the thought process, and believe that Carolina will look to move one of their solid young Dmen, I have to agree with the above that the package as offered wouldn't be enough, nor even a good fit for Carolina and Pesce! Something either has to be added, (Carrick depth RD at best), or I wonder if a sign and trade (seldom done) for JVR, (although little advantage to JVR) could make it attractive. I also think that Carolina and Toronto match up well, in terms of trading from areas of strength, but a larger overall package might have to be the way to go!
