Any candidates you do find are going to be in the same mold as folks like Danault and Desharnais - middle-6 at best, trending lower rather than higher. Prospects with high upside are pretty much right out. The problem is that even teams that do have a surplus of Cs and a need for wingers recognize that they've got some very valuable assets, and they're going to want to exploit that somehow - and if they can't do so in the trade market, on the ice works just as well.

Well then... Pacioretty is a former star winger that seems to be declining. Or at least has had a bad season. His contract is also an issue that lowers his value.

I'd say from proven NHL centers closest to his value are Nick Bjugstad (a little bit worse player but good contract), Adam Henrique (center who's finding his game phase + his contract is also about to end) and Charlie Coyle (good player but his role in Minnesota doesn't really let him shine in there).

From center prospects, I'd go for B-tier prospects, such as Aleksi Heponiemi, Nick Merkley, Tage Thompson and Sam Steel.

Alongside with these mentioned players, you can also try to acquire some draft picks.

You could also try to swap Pacioretty straight to a semi-high draft pick.

Obviously, depending on which team you're trading with, you can get a higher price.

You say this as though it has any relevance whatsoever. Yes, he's a top-line winger. Winger. Those are centers with top-line upside. Generally speaking, a winger cannot be an effective center but a center can be an effective winger. None of the teams that those centers play for are in a position such that one year of MaxPac represents the difference between where they are now and competing for the Cup.

What quality of center did Rick Nash return in trade when he left the Blue Jackets? What came back when Taylor Hall was traded? How about Brandon Saad (the first trade)? How about JvR when he arrived in Toronto? How many centers or defensemen came back in the trades of guys like Phil Kessel and Martin St. Louis and Tomas Vanek (the first time, when he was still top-line quality)? Seriously, the only examples in the past decade of a team trading a top-line-winger-based package and getting back a top quality C is the Tyler Seguin trade in 2013 for Loui Eriksson and a bunch of extras (widely regarded as a massive ripoff) and the Carter-for-Voracek trade (which also included an early 1st with that winger plus another asset, and nearly broke the Jackets). Defensemen sometimes get traded for Cs, but the last time a quality defenseman was traded for a quality winger was in 2017 when the Habs gave away Sergachev.

Seriously. He's not worth what you think he is on the trade market. It's just the reality of the situation. A good center or defenseman is something you can sell; a good winger is something you can buy; and one should consider oneself extraordinarily lucky if they manage either of those the other way around straight up.
