Caps outbid the total price at an aav of 7.44 over 8 years, front loaded more because more term allows that, so Carlson banks more total savings at the end of seven years, once you count inflation, at which point if he thinks he has another big contract in him at 35, he can pull a Kovalchuk and get it in Russia. The Caps fans there know his name. The top GM used to be his teammate.
So you can go higher than the deal the other Oilers fans are already saying is bad for Edmonton and outbid Washington, or you could talk to them about a sign and trade scenario. I think they have no top center prospects, and few at right D, and Edmonton has so much depth it would hardly notice Yamamoto and Bear for a guy who, in his career year, is indeed going to get some Norris votes. The worst that happens is Carlson says no, and that can happen either way, so why get him at a 9M cap hit (and still risk getting outbid) when you could get it down to 7 and get it done ahead of free agency, for prospects?
Yes, most years Carlson has less than 60 points. But he hasn't played with MacDavid and Draisatl, yet.
