Description
Yes this team has been inconsistent this year, but the blame shouldn't be solely on Gulutzan. There were times this year when the Flames played solid complete games against the top teams in the league and then there were others when they laid an egg. A lot of the blame has to fall on the players and leadership as they haven't been able to get up for big games. Their power play has been awful all year (they should fire Dave Cameron for this) and they haven't been able to score consistently down the stretch. I don't think that's Gulutzan's fault as he has to work with what he has been given from management, and the mix of this team is clearly not good enough.

If they do fire Gulutzan, they shouldn't trade Brodie. Ever since Gulutzan became coach, Brodie's game has dropped off significantly, so if they do decide to make a coaching change, they should keep Brodie to see how he plays in a new system. Brodie used to be considered one of the top up-and-coming defenceman in this league before Gulutzan was hired, so I think they should be careful when thinking about trading him. Bottomline, fire Gulutzan or trade Brodie this offseason, NOT BOTH!

I don't think they are going after the top potential coaches available (Quenneville, Trotz, etc.) if they fire Gulutzan because they don't want to pay them a lot of money. That leaves guys who have little to no head coaching experience left, and I don't know if it is worth it to fire him and force the players to learn a whole new system again and start out slow next season.

If they keep Gulutzan, his leash will be short to start next season. If they start slow he will likely get fired and I guess I would be wrong to have kept him.

Just thinking purpose of Washington if they trade Orpik is to get cap space, not acquire cap space in return like Brodie.

Yeah I would agree that the blame shouldn't all fall on Gulutzan. The Flames had some rotten luck ever since this losing streak started and are shooting something like 4% since late February. The team needs more proven finishers for next season. I wouldn't be shocked to see Gully go, but I think they would do alright if they keep him and improve certain areas. Brodie seems to be the guy on the way out and I'd agree with what you said about him.
Edit: Also if we're giving up Rasmus Andersson (top D prospect) to Pittsburgh, I'd rather get their top RW prospect in Daniel Sprong vs a 25 year old RW who has topped out at 38 points.

Why do posters think that Jankowski will sign for anything less than the exact same deal given to Bennett (2 years x $1.95M)? Jankowski has proven himself capable at the center position at the AHL and NHL level now (Bennett has not been able to do the same).

Both 1st round picks. This is basic.

I think WSH is getting a better defenceman in Brodie. The guy just needs a change of scenery and I think he would fit nicely on the Caps blueline.

I totally agree with all of your points. Sprong would probably be more attractive to the Flames for sure. My reasoning for acquiring Rust is just because he has won two cups and I think his experience would be valuable in the room. I would definitely do the trade for Sprong though

Treliving is a hard-ball negotiator. Jankowski may have proven himself to be a better center than Bennett but he has only played less than 1 season of NHL hockey. Bennett had 2+ years with more points than Jankowski has this year. He's got no arbitration rights so the Flames are in a position of power
