Overpayments to build cap space and end up with five forward lines, five defensive pairs, and three goalies, all under the salary cap? Are you saying the Caps don't need to make many deals for cap space? Or just trying to plot out a future depth chart? You think Geisser starts ahead of Johansen or Siegenthaler? He's got size... but they all have pro experience. That'd be a bit of a surprise out of camp.
I wouldn't give a 2nd pick for cap space and then not sign anyone new with it. I mean, if you cut eight guys, you might have enough space here to sign Kovalchuk, and then we can shrug off the overpayments. But otherwise trading Orpik leaves enough room to keep Grubauer and Connolly.
DSP might not stay for less than a QO, and Connolly doesn't have his toughness, but scores more goals.
I mean, compared to earlier trades of Kyrou and other amateurs for Backstrom and Holtby, I have to say that Grubauer and Connolly is almost a relief. But on its own, it seems a little ridiculous.
