Description
Not spending a lot of time at this! simple question: is the upgrade from Gardiner's frequent give-always and inability to win any battle in the corner to McDonagh's overall stability for two playoff runs worth three quality prospects!

Not from the Leafs perspective I wouldn't say. At present they have this big, long window in which to contend. Maybe 8-12 years after this one. But McDonagh is signed for one more year (as is Gardiner).

After that next year, you are out Bracco and Borgman and your late 1st from the year before.
Also, now McDonagh makes just a bit more than Jake, but if you want to re-sign him will cost much more.
Also, McDonagh shoots Left and plays LD, and you have traded away two very capable LD to get him, but done nothing about the ugly situation at RD.

I looked up gardiner's stats. 83 giveaways for a defenseman 62 games in is pretty awful. To take that plus a 4 million cap for another year isn't great. Leafs have to add something to sweeten the deal. Rangers already have enough turnover machines on defense.
I think a deal not involving Gardiner would interest rangers, however. Depends what comes back though, and what Lamoriello is willing to part ways with. Liljegren and Marner immediately come up and Rangers would want one of them. And I highly doubt either of them are going anywhere.

In short, a trade between this teams likely won't work.

Truth is Doug I have no problem trading Gardiner as I do not rate him as high as you obviously do, the larger question is to compare three quality prospects to two rounds of playoffs with a legitimate number 1 defenseman

Doug. Any advice. On Monday TDL day, I have drive 2 hours to take my wife to doctor's appointment, wait and then return. Any advice on how I can stay home and not do a husband's duties?

That is my first reaction but sometimes I think you have to give quality to get quality

Glad you bring up the turnover figures. Last year, Erik Karlsson and Brett Burns were 1/2 in turnovers. Morale of the story, Gardiner should have turned over the puck more and he would have been in the Norris talk.
Fact is, players that have the puck and are delegated to be puck movers will have the most turnovers. So your point is?

I breakdown the leafs into groups: they now have 8 quality forwards I would not trade, 4 quality men, including Dermott and Liljegren, and Anderson. The prospects I offered would not affect this and still leave Johnson, Grundstrom and Rasanen! Again, think you have to give to get

Fair point. It's just that Rangers defense is so bad that Gardiner is not the proper answer. Also, Burns and Karlsson have a much higher skill set than Gardiner. It's hard to compare them to him.

Hey Rangers fan, this is a sweetheart deal for you, your GM would snap it up in a second. You have your head stuck in your rectum I'm afraid. Do you know the saying "You needn't look a gift horse in the mouth"?
Just traded Holden for a 3rd and an empty contract, but you are cluelessly babbling about Marner and Liljegren...

Yea, I was making a statement of about stats. Leafs will live with Gardiner this year and next but won't offer him a contract in 2019, but someone will. I don't like the trade because even McDonagh (or Karlsson or OEL) are really going to change the Leafs fortunes this year and next. Just can't see the Leafs giving up good futures for what would like be minimal gain. In 2019 and beyond will maybe the Leafs are true contenders, then maybe move in made.
Regarding Gardiner, when he's on his game....he's quite impressive, but when not he does make bonehead plays. I call him the Good Jake or the Bad Jake. Like in the original Star Trek series when Kirk was divided into two in the transporter, he was either good or bad, but nothing in between.

Not cluelessly. Gorton doesn't have to trade Mcdonagh. I don't think he is looking to add a 26 year old in a rebuild. He's only going to accept an overpayment at the deadline (i.e. if the Lightning were to give up Sergachev).
Otherwise, he will revisit at draft. Maybe this trade works at the draft. But certainly not now.

Man, he's not saying Gardiner = Burns or Karlsson.

Gardiner is pretty good, and would help just about any team's D, that goes double for a Rangers team selling off McDonagh to follow Holden.

Rangers told their fans they will sell off players, they are already awful. You hope they are trying to rebuild right? This deal would sure help

I know he isn't. My point was Burns and Karlsson are elite and therefore they're turnovers matter less.
Of course Rangers are trying to rebuild. The value of the deal is fair, it's just that they're more likely to wait until draft if they don't get a high caliber player at the deadline. Remember if he's traded at deadline, that's two playoff runs and a full season of him.
Done arguing with you. Maybe we think differently, but your head seems to be farther up your rectum than mine.
