That's all we're getting for an elite goalie and #1 defenseman? Caps pass quicker than they should've passed on Erat for Forsberg
Holtby is 2nd all time in playoff save percentage and goals against average, and he has 8 more playoff wins since 2011 than Fleury. But the Caps' regular season team records for those categories are held by Grubauer, whom I think they re-sign, long-term, at 3M before making this deal. So the Caps only make that side of the deal if they're willing to gamble on a goalie two years younger, in order to save 3M in cap space at goalie, even before Holtby's next contract extension, when he'll get another raise.
Carlson plays 25 minutes a night of solid defense and is 4th in scoring among defensemen. He's a Norris candidate. His next contract could be 9M, like Subban, whom he's playing like this year. It could be less because some years he's merely a defensive stalwart and an iron man and a power play genius whose accurate one touch shots and no look one touch passes are just amazing.
.Colin Miller is three years younger, plays 18 minutes a night and change, and is 22nd in scoring among defensmen. He'll also be a UFA at the end of the year, but with only one solid year of work to stand on as a power play specialist, his next contract could be 4M per, with a reasonable term. He keeps the Caps power play credible while Madison Bowey develops into a long term solution at the right point.

Yeah. I thought my last draft was more fair, where I also threw the Caps Hyka, Suzuki, Schneider, and one pick in each round, instead of just a first. But a bunch of people said Vegas would pass. Maybe if I put the Holtby trade and the Carlson trade as separate deals, so it's easier to see the breakdown in value? Both guys are amazing, and would significantly help Vegas win a Cup this year.
