So apparently the Flames aren't scouting Zack Smith according to Friedman's 31 thoughts...

Hoffman is the obvious choice, but the Flames don't have the picks to do it.

I think they are looking at Pageau, to split time at C with Jankowski on the 3rd line, depending which side the draw is on, but primarily to play RW. Also would help the penalty kill.

I would probably move ONE of Dube or Fox. I would also throw in a Mangiapane, Kylington or Gillies. Maybe that's too far off, but Dube and Fox are really high end prospects

As a pens fan, I think the price may be a 1st and a B grade prospect. However, the Flames don't have the picks for this year so I'm thinking maybe a 2019 1st, 2018 4th, and Dube. I know it's pretty steep but he's on a pretty good deal

I don't think I would move Fox or Dube for Pageau. He's a 3rd liner at best, and not worth giving up a high end prospect. Ottawa can ask for that all they want, but it shouldn't happen. He's never even had a 20 goal season, and has been closer to 10 than 20 the last couple of years. He also doesn't drive play well, so there aren't many secondary benefits.

I'd do Kylington and/or Gillies for him, but he just isn't worth much beyond that.

That's just wrong he is not 3rd line at best player. He can play up and down the lineup in multiple positions and elevates his game in the playoffs. His role on the third line has resulted in his production. His energy and compete level are off the charts. I am not a Ottawa fan by any stretch and i am closer to disliking the team as a habs fan but living in Ottawa i see him play a lot. You will need a mid-late 1st rounder and a decent prospect to pull him out of Ottawa minimum, he is a favorite there of both the fans and the management. I like the majority of your posts ekpaul but this i think you might be way off on your assessment of the player.

I think either one good prospect and a 3rd, or two of the lesser and a 2nd would probably get it done. Sounds like Pittsburgh's price would be Jarry or Sprong and a 2nd. I'd say those two are on the same level as Dube, so yeah, as a Sens fan I'd take that. Pageau isn't just a simple 3C; he's a very effective shutdown player if played in the bottom 6, but can also play in the top 6 in case of injury and has succeeded there before. He's fast, he's smart, and he plays with a heck of a lot of heart. Two B-ish prospects and a 2nd or a B+ to A- prospect and a 3rd sound like the right price.

I appreciate the kind words about the majority of my posts. I had a good impression of Pageau last year as well, but I started to dig into his stats more as he became heavily involved in rumours going to the Penguins, and what I found is that he elevated his game in the playoffs once. One single game where he had 4 goals and it's all anyone remembers about him. Outside of that one game, he had 4 goals and 2 assists in 18 games last year, and 8 goals and 4 assists in 34 career playoff games. He has 119 points in 301 career regular season games (a 32 points per 82 games pace).

I pulled his Hero Chart off http://ownthepuck.blogspot.ca/ and if you run him against a 3rd line centre, he gets more ice time than a typical third line centre but produces less offence and poorer shot suppression.

I agree that he plays with a lot of energy and high compete level, which is why fans like him, but when you really dig into his stats and underlying numbers, there's a massive gap between perceived and actual value IMO.
