Leafs improve with Gudas trade

Description
Gudas! Another high impact play for Philly's Praha Piranha. This time to the head of NJ's Palmieri. Accidental or not, it was a reckless play. Philly are not a very good team, and their GM must know it. They will play like a lottery team again...and Gudas is not a big ask. Lou insists that Polak be part of the trade so that Babcock can't play him.
Amazingly, Gudas had gone 22 straight games without a penalty. Almost 400 minutes of hard nosed NHL defence without a penalty for anything.
What can he say, he's a wild and crazy swinging kind of guy.

  1. Gudas, Radko
Détails additionnels:
A recent blog piece had Gudas as Toronto's most attainable RD upgrade. Also noted that Philly is stocked with D prospects. They have a stacked 2018 draft, so 2019 pick could be coveted.

Détails additionnels:
Overpaying for Gudas I know, but Leivo should get to play somewhere, and Polak and Gauthier should not play for the Leafs again!

Détails additionnels:
Re-sign Ryan as Bozak's replacement, 2.3M x 2 years. He's cheaper, younger, better.

I think you're the only leafs fan in the world who realizes that Leivo isn't worth 5 first round picks and a top 10 player in the league.

I wonder how many "rentals" are going be available at TDL. Philly and Carolina are still gunning for a playoff spot, do they want to give up anyone?

Is he really a Babcock Type player low hockey IQ, undisciplined on the ice, and reportedly doesn't think he needs to change due to how he lacks respect for Hextall and Co. Seeing that he was asked to tone down the dirty hits last year and still does it.

Also, if the leafs are intersted in Ryan there will be a lineup. So honestly Soshnikov, Leivo and Rosen could probably get him.

Roman Polak is the punching bag of advanced analytics.
Josh Leivo won't have a long term role with Philadelphia.
Everything else isn't substantial enough to compensate Philadelphia for a RHD, the only one they have, who improves whomever his pair.

Provorov-Gostisbehere
Hagg-MacDonald
Manning-Polak

This defense would be killed.

Need to add more in order to get Gudas from Philadelphia

Let's be honest here. Gudas SHOULD be had for at best for Philly a 5th round pick.

You're joking, right? Ever player that has played on his pair this season does better. He makes others better and is a key penalty killer for our god awful PK. I would revert you back to the pairs above.

Let me guess, you're a Philly fan?
I happen to like Gudas a lot, and the last two months he has run around helping Philly, and taking no penalties, despite the reputation and the accidental charge last night.
That is why, on top of a winger who could play for Philly's bottom six but not yet Toronto's, a good AHL defensive center, and an experienced 8th Dman for depth, Toronto also gives up a 4th and 7th.
Would you be interested in Matt Martin?

I believe that would work also PuckPal.
If only deadline deals included sign and trades in the NHL. Toronto needs a 3C so bad that they could do it. Lock Ryan up for 2.2 x 3years to play in Toronto as a cheap 3C while everyone gets expensive.

I am. Watchnig players like Brandon Manning and Andrew MacDonald playing defense has been a major struggle this year. Gudas is our #3, our only RHD, and one of our better penalty killing defensemen.

The issue is what your sending in return doesn't match our needs in context. We have players in the AHL that are waiting to push thru, such as Oskar Lindblom, Mike Vecchione, and Danick Martel. Levio would be no help to us in the long run, as the aforementioned players and other prospects, such as Wade Allison, German Rubstov, Mikhail Yorobyov, and Morgan Frost would all push Leivo out of his role in Philadelphia.

Mikhail Vorobyov is our best defensive center in the farm, and should be fightin for a job out of camp. Acquiring Gauthier wouldn't help us in the long run, again.

Roman Polak is completely ineffective. He is essentially a defensive liability at all times. You suggested that he would be our #8. He would be playing nightly because Travis Sanheim isn't playing (for some reason) and other players like Mark Alt or Sam Morin are not anywhere near effective as Gudas.

The draft picks, yeah I find value in those, but based on all of the above, those are the only assets that have a chance at being relevant to Philadelphia.

The context is key. Gudas does so much for us that trading him without a replacement will make our penalty kill even worse (if that is possible) and wont be able to supress shots or drive play.

Matt Martin would have no role in Philadelphia. He would just take a roster spot from a younger player.
