Pettersson is more than nothing. He is an excellent defenseman though his offensive upside is average. Now Pittsburgh can trade Määttä for a solid forward prospect or young roster player without worrying about Riikola taking on a full time roll. I think this points towards a Määttä trade. No team that needs Määttä is going to trade a second pairing LHD.

Penguins Fans infatuation with making Sprong out to be a player he is not is absurd. He has one of the best shots I've seen but that doesn't get you a spot on an NHL roster alone. There is a very clear reason why he was healthy scratched in Wilkes Barre during his 20+ goal season. I have physically seen him yell at other teammates for not passing him the puck when he is open. That shxt doesn't fly on Sullivan's team unless you prove your worth. He has plenty of chances to show what he can do playing along side of Sid but unfortunately did not keep consistent. I agree with everyone that he was never going to do anything playing 8min a game with Cullen & Sheahan, but he also shouldn't be gifted top6 minutes just because of what he did in juniors. I really hope he does turn out to be a great player and figures it out, but it wasn't the right fit in Pittsburgh's top6, that's all.

Pettersson is a fine player. Some have said he was a converted winger and plays strong in his own end. It also opens it up for a potential trade of Maatta or Johnson now, like said NucksFanForLive said above. It was either that he was going to be added to a large package for a return, or that we were going to get nothing for him, so I think they did pretty good with this trade.

Off of the trade, I like your interest in Namestikov. I thought Tampa took a hit when they lost him to add McDonagh & JT Miller, even with how great both of those players are. Don't know if a 2nd would work cap wise, but I am interested none the less!

I just cringe at the Penguins getting carried by Sid and Malkin to two cups with an atrocious defense -> GM sees correlation -> proceeds to sign said sh*tty defense and other worse pieces -> confused when you're paying north of 20m on defense an have 1 decent defender. I'd be furious too, not because this trade is so damn awful, but because somehow Sprong on an elc is the problem instead of Jack Johnson making over 3m for 5 seasons.



Well playing him consistently in the top 6 could land you a better asset in a trade. Like it's not as much about who gets priveliged as it is about managing assets

by that logic McDavid and Matthews should have never been gifted a role outside the 4th line, nor Crosby or Malkin when they came into the league etc....

Just stupid logic all the way around. You don't take a goal scorer and put him on a checking line and expect him to change his game. Might as well ask slOV to play a trap scheme...oops.

Horrible trade from a team that mismanaged the kid from top to bottom. Another player player Sullivan chased out. Much like Cole. How did that work out. When your head gets to big you destroy a team. I agree the team needs a shake up. Should start with the coach and the GM at this point. Enough bad moves to justify it. Hell they gave up a 1st round pick for a 4th line goon. Back to back years of larger contracts for horrible defense men. Traded out very useful players for not much in return. In general they have mismanaged this whole team and it's costing the final years on the ice of some of the best players who have ever put on skates.
