tanev is not worth half that. he is not as good as some think plus he is always hurt.
I don't think that trade is happening, it's been around forever -- they can't or won't do it.
Rosen is never going to play in the NHL, so realistically see that as the Leafs opening up one of their 50 contract slots.
Johnsson is also a depth prospect who may never graduate from the AHL.
A late 1st isn't much, non-roster depth players get traded for 2nds and 3rds.
50% of the time, a late 1st won't play more than 100 games in the NHL.
The problem the Leafs have is that our drafting is still quite poor outside of the first round, not that we're trading the 1st.
If the same scouts are in charge, I'd sooner trade the Leafs 2nd through 7th picks x 2 years in a row just to get one proven NHL D.
A late 2nd = 30% for 100 GP, after that picks 3-7 = 10% each. Add them up for 80% chance of 100 GP. 2 years in a row = 160%
If Rosen and Johnsson each had 50% of 100 NHL GP, this package would be 50% for the late 1st + 50% + 50% = 150%
It's both the cost in draft picks is higher than you might expect, and also that it's not near the price of any NHL D that plays big minutes.
The Marlies have done great, but I don't foresee that translating to the NHL where it makes a difference. There is a pipeline problem, we're only getting late round picks from now on, and we can't sign UFAs to fill every need
Carolina won't save us, they did their deals with LA/Edmonton (Sekera) and Calgary (for Hamilton) and look what that cost a team outside their conference.
We're not a match for ANA like NJ were, no spare cap space.
DAL won't give up Klingberg or Heiskanen, not even for Karlsson.
It's going to take a lot of waiting just to get a chance to put in the highest bid, but there's no alternatives for Dubas other than a UFA Karlsson who will force out at least Nylander due to salary cap. In retrospect, how did NJ signing Will Butcher as a UFA out of the NCAA not get more attention in the media -- that would have been as big as signing Tavares.
