I understand the appeal of the offer sheet, but they just don't make sense. At least not when you are talking about star level players like Nylander. Where offer sheets work, is after the Leafs sign their big guns. Let's say a guy like Johnsson or Kapanen have a decent year this season. One of them scores 20 goals and 40+ points. That player could be looking for a multi year deal worth 3+ a season and Toronto, frankly, can not afford that. That's where an offer sheet would not be matched and then costs only a 2nd round pick.
