Quoting: Larkinisking
Between Leon Draisaitl and Erik Karlsson you're adding $20 million to your roster. Not bad enough that Parise is't living up to his contract with all of his injuries. Parise and Suter alone are killing the Wilds cap let alone adding Draisaitl and Karlsson to the mix.
You're forgetting that trading Nino, Spurgeon, Dumba, Staal, and Foligno all free up cap space... So we really aren't "adding $20M", if you assume Karlsson signs that $11.5M extension, were only adding about $2M (Dumba makes 6, Spurgeon makes about 5, Nino makes about 5, and Foligno with the retention adds about 2). If anything this helps our situation, we are one of the teams with the most contracts above $5M as our old GM really liked having depth in the lineup, but look how far that has gotten us. Some superstar players are what we've lacked since inception (with the only exception being Gaborik but even he wasn't a superstar). If you look at the long term outlook we'd be able to fit the extensions of our RFA's and depth signings in for at least the 19/20 season. As for Parise, he was our best player at the end of the season last year. He was close to a PPG player in the last month. He has had injury issues, but when he's healthy he's worth every cent of that contract. Just look at each of our players production in the postseason against Winnipeg and the last part of the regular season and you'll see what I mean. Suter is worth more than his contract, he could be making $8-9M had he not signed a 13 year deal. I'll agree with you that both of their contracts might hurt in 5 years, but they turned this franchise around.
Also OP, this thread is almost identical to
@BurgerBoss post with the exception of the NSH trade and adding my advice about getting Skinner.
