Description
Gardiner swapped for Myers. Both are in the last years of their contract, helps both the Leafs and Jets balance the RD/LD.

Package put together for Justin Faulk. Canes need a tender, bottom six help and get a prospect in Bracco and a 1st. And Josh Leivo, because #free josh leivo.

Dermot gets bumped to 2LD (natural replacement to Gards and he needs more ice time) and Hainsey slots down next to Zaitsev and helps him get his game back. If Zaitsev turns it around then he sticks for the following year and Myers walks. If he doesn't turn it around, Myers is extended with cap space to spare, and Z gets moved.

UFA signings of Stastny and Brodziak to solidfy 1-4 C. Stastny centers Johnsson and Kappy . Stastny > Bozie. Johnsson/Kappy = to or > JVR/Brown.

Aaltonen and Grundstrom make the team as 4th line wingers, and grind and throw energy with Brodziak.

Babs now has 7 roster players that can play C. Hopefully we're finished spending a second on 4C help at the deadline now.

Borgman and Lilly take one more year with the Marlies before making the jump in 2020.

Thoughts?

You're getting absolutely fleeced in that Faulk trade. You could probably take out Bracco and downgrade the 1st to a 3rd and the 'Canes would still say yes.

The Leafs - with this setup specifically - best hope the cap jumps to $82M after next season and that Myers isn't in the market for a massive raise. I imagine Kapanen and Marner can be resigned just on the extra cap space, the raise to $78M this season, and Hainsey's money coming off the books. Might have anywhere between $1M-$2M remaining.

But Matthews still needs a contract. If the plan is to let Myers walk, slot Liljegren in the #6 spot, and push that money, whatever's leftover from Kapanen+Marner, and (optimistically) the additional $4M for 2019/20, THEN the cap situation works fine. Otherwise, I'd plead with Thornton to leave SJS and come to Toronto for 1 year and take a C in this year's draft. Jacob Olofsson is available near where the leafs pick and could turn pro next season. Maybe it's a better long-term solution?

PSA: Don't play Faulk with Dermott. Faulk can't defend and Dermott shouldn't need to be tasked with being a complete defenseman this early into his career. Hainsey, with rest, probably still has enough in the tank to play 2nd pairing for the first half of the season. I'd strongly consider it.

Gardiner for Myers is interesting, but I definitely wouldn't do it one for one if I'm Winnipeg. Myers is a big, defensively responsible player who will put up good, not great numbers offensively. He also shoots right, which by default makes him more valuable. Gardiner on the other hand is an offensive dynamo who couldn't find his own ass if it was on his side of centre ice. If you really want to get full value on a Gardiner trade, I'd look to edmonton. He might be the perfect winger for Draisaitl

Point taken. I'd rather not send Bracco or a 1st. But can we still #free josh leivo?

That is the hope. The second posting of this roster fits the cap with all the 3 signed to fair money, Myers at $6M (meaning Z gets shipped) and Kappy at Hyman/Brown money (maybe low on that?? could see him at $3M if he produces next year)

I'd like to get Jumbo if he is open to it (and would throw money at him for 1 yr) and then move Willy to 3C in 2020 but from what I've read it sounds like Joe wants to stay in SJ, and would do it it on the cheap for a one year deal to make it work for them.

Point taken * 2. Hainsey and Faulk have some history playing together too, so that's a bonus. And I hear ya on Faulks shortcomings, I kinda see him as a right shot Jake Gardiner, and I like Gards! But we need RD, and I see Derts ultimately taking Gards spot. And while Dert could use another year in the 5/6 slot I think he has top 4 potential written all over him, with Borgman fillingn in behind in the 6 slot at some point.

I like Gards, I just see Dertmott taking his spot in time, and I don't see the leafs being able to keep him. Plus we need RD help and it doesn't make sense to me to keep letting players walk in their last year for nothing (likely JVR/Bozack/Leo). If Myers works then he gets re-upped after his current contract is up and Zaits gets dealt to clear cap space. If Myers wants too much $$ then he walks and Zaits stays (I think he has better hockey in him than what he showed once he came back from injury and illness this year). But, if the Jets wont do a one for one on Myers (and I think they're going to lose him anyways with the log jam on RD and Laine and others needing contracts) then maybe they would consider Leivo offered in the Faulk trade (Better Chiarelli is right, I was way heavy on that), because # free josh leivo!
