It’s my opinion that neither Philips nor Raddysh are in the hawks plans, despite the fact I think they should resign Philips. As for the AA for Smith swap, it’s something I think would benefit both sides.
Yes, Raddysh is likely on his way out. Phillips won't get much more time, simply because of CHI's depth at LD. But I'd rather sign him as a 7th D, give him a shot, and let the other waiver exempt guys cook in Rockford, than sign another Tinordi/Megna/etc. He was set up to fail last season just as much as anyone else. But just one or two seasons ago, he was the best D in the AHL. He is still very young and was allowed into the AHL early on a covid year exception, which is why it might seem he has been around a long time. That said, you could say the same about a lot of guys in CHI's system. Very few guys are untouchable.
As for Smith and AA. Smith is a cap dump that a 4th probably doesn't pay for. AA is also likely a cap dump in the eyes of most teams, even if CHI has zero need to dump him. So why would PIT dump cap just to take on almost the same amount of cap in a player that has been equally as disappointing? Albeit, the disappointment with AA can be explained by injury and surgery recovery. Other teams still don't know what they are getting and he costs almost the same amount. And next question, why would CHI be giving extra just to take back a cap dump they aren't being compensated for and move a guy they don't need to move? CHI is essentially paying PIT here to take their cap dump, even if PIT might not see it that way.
