What to do about the salary cap next year?

Here's a quick explanation:

Since this is posted on Oct. 23 2017 and we're pretty early in the season, this team edit is only considering the cap situation that the Oilers will have next season...

The situation in Edmonton kind of looks like Pittsburgh with Crosby and Malkin... They tried playing them together for a good amount of time only to figure out that making them their first 2 centers would intimidate other teams. Hence why putting McDavid and Draisaitl on separate lines is the way to go.

The Sekera trade:

Sekera being injured for most of the season, we don't really now at this point if there is a possibility that he will come back and produce to compensate for the 5.5 millions he is getting paid... Hence why getting rid of him for a prospect (good one, size and puck handling) and a pick will help the team in the future.

As stated in the additional details, if he plays more than 50 games with New Jersey for the upcoming season (2018-2019), the pick that Edmonton receives changes from a 4th to a 2nd (which makes sense; he could get injured next year and that would be an easy 4th round pick for Edmonton)

The R-N-H trade:

Big salaries taking up place next year (McDavid, Draisaitl, Lucic, etc...), getting rid of him for a big 4th line LW in Ferland and a prospect goalie such as Parsons that do not take much salary space is key.

The 1st round pick that Calgary would have to give up is debatable on the type of season that they would have this year (2017-2018), but this trade is made considering that they are building up since 2015.

Also as mentioned in the add. details, Ferland playing more than 40 games (41, which is half of the season...), changes the 1st for a 2nd.

The Strome brothers trade:

This is only based on what Dylan Strome of Arizona has produced until now (Oct. 23, 2017). The whole point of this trade is to give McDavid a familiar face on the right wing (They both played together in Erie - OHL).

His older brother not exactly fitting in the full-packed center squad, trading his negotiation rights before July 1st is a good move for Arizona, which are in need of a two-way center.

Again, as explained in the details, Edmonton's 3rd round pick becomes a 2nd if Dylan Strome plays more than 30 games in the upcoming season (2018-2019). That way, if things don't work out, a 3rd round pick is not a whole lot to regret.

Also, concerning that pick, part of it is to compensate for shipping the buyout of Pouliot's contract (1.333 million per year until 2021). So if you look at the cap space for this theoretical season (3.760 millions), you can deduct the 1.333 million off of it (Capfriendly should really insert that into the Armchair-GM mode's trading blocks).

In conclusion, we add depth and size to the roster without hurting the locker room chemistry and still having almost 4 millions on the cap space.
